Eligibility and Requirements

To be considered for the Surgery Medical Registrar Vacancy, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Essential Qualifications:

  • MBChB or equivalent qualification: The applicant must hold an MBChB degree or an equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA): The applicant must be registered with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner, with current registration for 2025.
  • Completion of Post-Community Service: The applicant must have passed the Primary exams of the College of Surgeons.
  • ATLS Certificate: The applicant should hold an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certificate, which is essential for surgical roles.

Additional Experience:

  • Ophthalmology Exposure: An added advantage would be a certificate in Ophthalmology (FC Opth Part 1) or at least two years of clinical experience, preferably with exposure to Ophthalmology.
  • Registrar Training: The candidate should be eligible for, or currently enrolled in, the Registrar Training Program with the University of the Witwatersrand.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Deliver Patient Care: Provide high-quality care to patients in the Ophthalmology Department and other clinical units.
  2. Registrar Training and Academic Program: Actively participate in the University of the Witwatersrand’s structured registrar training program.
  3. Clinical Rotation: Rotate through various clinical units, providing services in clinics, theatres, and during on-call shifts as required.
  4. Teaching and Mentorship: Assist with the teaching of interns, community service officers, medical students, and nursing staff, contributing to the academic development of junior healthcare professionals.
  5. Clinical Audits and Research: Engage in clinical audits, departmental meetings, and research initiatives aimed at improving the hospital’s healthcare delivery systems.
  6. Adherence to Professional Ethics: Maintain the highest professional standards in line with the Batho Pele principles and contribute to the department’s growth in the context of patient care.
  7. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with medical staff from various academic institutions, including the University of Pretoria and Sefako Makgatho University, as this role is a joint appointment with these institutions.
