Thousands of residents across Johannesburg are experiencing planned water outages and reduced pressure this week as infrastructure maintenance, reservoir cleaning and upgrades continue across multiple regions. The disruptions affect areas in Regions A, B, D and F, with some communities facing interruptions lasting up to six days. According to Joburg Water, the work is aimed at improving long-term supply reliability, reducing water losses and upgrading ageing infrastructure.

Multiple Regions Affected by Planned Maintenance

The outages form part of a broader programme by Joburg Water to maintain and upgrade critical infrastructure across the city. The work includes commissioning new systems, reservoir inspections, structural repairs and sewer pipeline replacements.

According to the utility, the disruptions vary in severity depending on the region, with some areas experiencing short-term interruptions while others face prolonged reduced pressure or extended outages.

Kyalami Gardens Hit by Day-long Shutdown

In Region A, residents in Kyalami Gardens were affected by a scheduled shutdown on Wednesday, 15 April.

The interruption ran from 9am to 4pm, leaving households without water for approximately seven hours.

    Affected extensions include:

    • 34, 35, 36, 37
    • 43, 47, 48
    • 51, 52 and 56

According to Joburg Water, the shutdown was necessary to commission new infrastructure, which is expected to improve long-term service delivery.

Region B Faces Weeks of Reduced Pressure

In Region B, two overlapping maintenance projects are affecting several suburbs, with residents experiencing reduced pressure or intermittent supply.

    Reservoir assessment project

The first project, which began on 24 March and runs until 21 April, affects:

    • Cresta
    • Robindale and Robindale Ext 4
    • Robin Hills
    • Darrenwood
    • Aldara Park
    • Randpark extensions 2 to 5
    • Windsor West and Windsor Glen

Joburg Water said the disruption is due to internal reservoir condition assessments, with supply being rerouted through a bypass system.

    Long-term Structural Repairs

    A second, longer-term project affects:

    • Melville
    • Emmarentia
    • Richmond
    • Greenside
    • Westdene
    • Westcliff
    • Auckland Park and Parktown West

This project began on 1 December 2025 and is expected to continue until 31 July 2026.

The work involves structural repairs to the Hursthill 2 Reservoir, with water supplied via alternative systems during the process.

    Chiawelo Residents Face Longest Outage

The most severe disruption is in Region D, where residents in Chiawelo and surrounding areas are facing extended water outages.

    Affected areas include:

    • Chiawelo and its extensions
    • Midway
    • Protea South and Protea North
    • Parts of Dlamini

The shutdown began on 14 April and is scheduled to end on 17 April. However, Joburg Water warned that recovery time could extend the total outage to up to six days.

    According to the utility:

    • Four days are required for cleaning the reservoir
    • An additional two days may be needed to refill it

“No water for a duration of four days, excluding recovery period,” the utility said, warning residents to prepare for extended disruption.

Kensington Sewer Upgrade Continues Into May

In Region F, residents in Kensington are not experiencing water outages but are affected by ongoing sewer infrastructure upgrades.

The project, which runs until 15 May, includes work along:

    • Queens Street
    • Langerman Drive
    • Westmoreland Road
    • Nottingham Road
    • Derby Road

Joburg Water said the upgrade involves replacing a 375mm sewer pipeline with a 400mm pipeline to improve capacity and reduce future blockages.

    Residents can expect:

    • Road closures and restricted access
    • Construction noise and machinery
    • Possible odours and temporary disruptions

The utility said mitigation measures are in place, including on-site teams and equipment to manage potential sewer spillages.

    Why The Outages are Happening

Joburg Water said the planned interruptions are part of efforts to:

    • Improve service delivery
    • Ensure continuity of water supply
    • Reduce water losses
    • Upgrade ageing infrastructure

While the work is expected to bring long-term benefits, residents in affected areas are experiencing immediate disruptions, with some areas receiving no alternative water supply during outages.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For residents across Johannesburg, the outages highlight ongoing pressure on the city’s water infrastructure.

    The impact includes:

    • Temporary loss of water supply in some areas
    • Reduced pressure affecting daily use
    • Disruptions to households and small businesses
    • Increased reliance on alternative water arrangements

At the same time, the maintenance programme reflects continued investment in infrastructure aimed at stabilising supply in the long term.

    FAQ: Joburg Water Outages

    Which areas are most affected?
Chiawelo and surrounding areas face the longest outages, while Region B suburbs are experiencing reduced pressure over several weeks.

How long will the outages last?
Some outages last a few hours, while others could extend up to six days including recovery time.

Why is there no water in some areas?
Outages are due to planned maintenance, reservoir cleaning and infrastructure upgrades.

    Will water tankers be provided?
Joburg Water has not confirmed widespread alternative supply but said assistance may be provided where necessary.

    When will normal supply return?
Timelines vary by project, with some work continuing into July 2026.

    What Happens Next

Joburg Water is expected to continue with its planned maintenance programme across multiple regions in the coming months. The utility has indicated that further updates will be issued as work progresses and as additional infrastructure projects are scheduled.

For affected residents, the timeline for full recovery will depend on the completion of ongoing projects and the stabilisation of supply systems across the city.
