IMESA Bursary Programme (2026)

The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) offers a bursary scheme designed to assist students pursuing studies in Civil Engineering and other engineering disciplines. IMESA’s bursary program aims to provide financial assistance to students who face challenges in affording their education, allowing them to focus on their studies and future careers.
What is the IMESA Bursary?
The IMESA Bursary supports students who have already enrolled in full-time studies at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa. It assists students who have passed their mid-year exams and are moving on to the next academic year. The bursary covers essential expenses such as tuition fees and books, allowing students to concentrate on their academic goals without the burden of financial stress.
Purpose of the IMESA Bursary Scheme
The IMESA Bursary Scheme has two main objectives:
- Providing Financial Support
Many students face financial barriers when pursuing higher education. IMESA recognizes these challenges and aims to offer financial assistance to students who need it most. The bursary allows students to continue their studies without worrying about tuition or study materials. - Encouraging Academic Achievement
IMESA seeks to acknowledge and reward academic excellence. The bursary prioritizes students who are dependents of IMESA members and have shown strong academic performance. By supporting high-achieving students, IMESA encourages continued dedication to academic success.
Who is Eligible for IMESA Bursaries?
To apply for the IMESA bursary, students must meet the following criteria:
- Full-Time Enrollment
Applicants must be enrolled in full-time studies at a recognized South African tertiary institution. The program must be accredited in Civil Engineering or other related engineering disciplines. - Completion of Mid-Year Exams
To ensure students are progressing in their studies, applicants must have successfully completed their mid-year exams. This requirement demonstrates that they are advancing academically before applying for bursary support. - Second Year or Higher
The bursary is available to students who are in their second year or higher of study. First-year students do not qualify. The program is aimed at those who are already established in their academic journey and need support to continue progressing. - Dependents of IMESA Members
Priority is given to students who are dependents of IMESA members. However, students who are not dependents of IMESA members can also apply, but their applications will be considered at the discretion of the IMESA Executive Council. - Consideration for Other Engineering Disciplines
Although the bursary primarily targets Civil Engineering students, those studying other engineering disciplines may also be eligible. The decision to offer the bursary to these students depends on the discretion of the IMESA Executive Council.
What Does the IMESA Bursary Cover?
The IMESA bursary covers the following expenses:
- Tuition Fees
The bursary pays for the student’s tuition fees for the upcoming academic year. This ensures that students do not have to worry about paying for their courses and can focus on their studies. - Books and Study Materials
The bursary also covers the cost of textbooks and study materials, allowing students to access the resources they need to succeed in their academic work. - Payment to Educational Institutions
IMESA pays the bursary directly to the educational institution, ensuring that the funds are used exclusively for tuition and study materials.
Mentorship and IMESA Activities
IMESA offers more than just financial support through its bursary scheme. Each successful bursary recipient is paired with a mentor who is an experienced professional in the field of engineering. Mentors guide students throughout their studies and help them with their academic and career development.
In addition, students who receive the bursary are encouraged to participate in IMESA activities. These activities give students the chance to connect with professionals in the field, learn about the latest industry developments, and expand their networks. Active involvement in IMESA events can open doors to valuable career opportunities and further professional growth.
How to Apply for IMESA Bursaries
Each year, the bursary application period opens in June and closes in September. Students who wish to apply must submit their applications by the deadline. There are two application forms available, depending on the applicant’s affiliation with IMESA:
- Form B is for dependents of IMESA members.
- Form A is for students who are not dependents of IMESA members.
Applicants must ensure they submit the required documents and forms by the closing date. After a thorough evaluation process, successful applicants will be notified before the end of the year.
