The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides vital financial assistance to individuals with disabilities through the Disability Grant. This grant supports those who are unable to work due to physical or mental disabilities, ensuring they can meet their basic needs.

    What Is the Disability Grant?

The Disability Grant is a monthly payment for individuals who have a permanent or temporary disability that renders them unfit to work. There are two types of grants:

    • Permanent Disability Grant: For disabilities expected to last longer than a year.
    • Temporary Disability Grant: For disabilities lasting between six and twelve months.

These grants are designed to provide financial relief to individuals during periods when they are unable to earn an income due to their disabilities.

How Much Is the Disability Grant in 2025?

As of April 1, 2025, the monthly Disability Grant maximum amount is R2310, per month. This increase from the previous amount of R2,180 reflects adjustments to help beneficiaries cope with inflation and rising living costs.

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Disability Grant, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Age: Between 18 and 59 years old.
    • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa.
    • Disability: Must have a permanent or temporary disability that impairs the ability to work.
    • Income: Single applicants must earn no more than R97,320 annually, while married applicants must have a combined income not exceeding R194,640.
    • Assets: Single applicants should not possess assets exceeding R1,379,400, and married applicants should have combined assets not exceeding R2,758,800.

Additionally, applicants must not be residing in a state institution and must undergo a medical assessment to confirm the degree of their disability.

    Application Process

Applying for the Disability Grant involves several steps:

    1. Visit a SASSA Office: Applicants must go to their nearest SASSA office to complete the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer.
    2. Submit Required Documents: Provide necessary documents, including a valid ID, medical report, proof of income, proof of assets, and proof of residence.
    3. Medical Assessment: Undergo a medical examination by a state-appointed doctor to assess the extent of the disability.
    4. Await Outcome: SASSA will process the application and inform the applicant of the decision.

The processing time for applications can take up to three months, and if approved, the grant will be paid from the date of application.

    Payment Methods

SASSA offers several payment methods to ensure beneficiaries can access their grants conveniently:

    • Direct Bank Deposit: The grant is deposited directly into the beneficiary’s bank account, including Postbank, Capitec, or any other bank.
    • Cash Collection at Pay Points: Beneficiaries can collect their grants in cash at designated SASSA pay points on specific days.
    • Institutional Payments: For individuals residing in institutions not funded by the state, the grant can be paid directly to the institution.

It is important for beneficiaries to select a payment method that is most convenient and secure for them.

    Payment Schedule for 2025

SASSA has set the following payment dates for the Disability Grant in 2025:

    • January 2025: Monday, 6 January
    • February 2025: Wednesday, 5 February
    • March 2025: Wednesday, 5 March
    • April 2025: Wednesday, 2 April
    • May 2025: Wednesday, 7 May
    • June 2025: Wednesday, 4 June
    • July 2025: Wednesday, 3 July
    • August 2025: Wednesday, 6 August
    • September 2025: Wednesday, 3 September
    • October 2025: Thursday, 3 October
    • November 2025: Wednesday, 5 November
    • December 2025: Wednesday, 3 December

These dates are subject to change, so beneficiaries are advised to confirm them by checking official SASSA communication channels or visiting the SASSA website.

    Important Considerations

    • Grant Suspension: The Disability Grant may be suspended if the beneficiary’s circumstances change, such as exceeding the income or asset thresholds, being admitted to a state institution, or failure to cooperate during a review.
    • Grant Lapse: The grant will lapse if the beneficiary passes away, is admitted to a state institution, does not claim for three consecutive months, or is absent from the country.
    • Grant-in-Aid: If a beneficiary requires regular attendance by another person due to their disability, they may qualify for a Grant-in-Aid, which provides additional financial support.

The SASSA Disability Grant is a crucial support mechanism for individuals unable to work due to disabilities. Understanding the eligibility criteria, application process, payment methods, and schedule is essential for beneficiaries to access this support effectively. By staying informed and adhering to the guidelines, individuals can ensure they receive the assistance they need to maintain their well-being and independence.

For more information or to apply, visit your nearest SASSA office or the official SASSA website.

The CAF Champions League final is turning Pretoria into one of Africa’s biggest football destinations this weekend as Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to host Morocco’s AS FAR at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. But for Gauteng tourism authorities, the event represents more than just football. It is part of a broader #SportingGP strategy aimed at positioning the province as Africa’s leading sports tourism and lifestyle destination.
