Far East Rand Hospital (FERH), located in Springs, Gauteng, is undergoing major renovations to its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit, starting on 22 August 2025. This initiative, part of a broader effort by the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) to enhance public healthcare facilities, will improve emergency care services in the region. While the renovations will bring long-term benefits, patients should be prepared for temporary changes during the four-month construction period.

    Renovation Overview: What’s Changing

The A&E Unit at FERH is set for a complete overhaul, which will include:

    • Modernised Treatment Spaces: The newly designed A&E Unit will feature updated medical technology, improved patient flow, and better treatment areas. These updates will enable faster triage and enhanced care for emergency cases.
    • Increased Capacity: The renovation will allow FERH to accommodate more patients and handle a higher volume of emergency cases. This will improve response times.
    • Improved Staff Facilities: A more functional work environment for healthcare workers will boost staff morale and enhance service delivery.

    Temporary Service Relocation

During the renovation period, emergency services at FERH will be temporarily relocated within the hospital to maintain uninterrupted care:

    • General Outpatient Department (OPD): A temporary structure will be set up outside the hospital to accommodate General OPD, Urology, and Medical OPD services. This facility will include consultation rooms and a waiting area.
    • Outpatient Services: Services like Gynaecology OPD and Surgical OPD will operate from other departments, such as the Ante-Natal Clinic and the Wound Clinic.
    • Orthopaedic, Dental, and Paediatric Clinics: These clinics will continue operating in the current OPD.
    • Surgical and Gynaecology Services: Patients needing surgical consultations or gynaecological care will receive treatment in designated temporary facilities within the hospital. This ensures minimal disruption.

    Managing Increased Patient Volume

To ensure that patients receive timely care, the hospital will collaborate with other healthcare facilities in the Ekurhuleni District. This partnership may involve diverting patients to nearby hospitals when FERH reaches capacity. This will help manage patient volume without compromising care standards.

Although temporary relocations may cause some inconvenience, these changes are essential for maintaining service delivery during the renovation. The GDoH encourages the public to remain patient and understanding, as the long-term improvements will significantly enhance emergency services at FERH.

    Impact on Patient Experience

The renovations will ultimately lead to a better overall experience for patients:

    • Faster Treatment: The modernized A&E Unit will streamline the triage process. This will reduce waiting times and ensure that patients are seen more quickly.
    • Enhanced Patient Comfort: With updated treatment spaces, patients will experience a cleaner, more comfortable environment.
    • Better Care Coordination: The upgraded facility will ensure that medical professionals can work more efficiently. This will improve patient outcomes in urgent situations.

What to Expect During Your Visit

If you need to visit the hospital during the renovation period, here’s what you can expect:

    • Temporary Locations for Some Services: Depending on the service required, hospital staff may direct you to a temporary facility or a different section of the hospital.
    • Increased Foot Traffic: With services temporarily relocated, certain areas of the hospital may experience higher volumes of people. Hospital staff will actively guide patients to the correct locations and ensure that care proceeds without delay.
    • Possible Disruptions: While the hospital will make every effort to minimize disturbances, there may be construction noise in some areas. The staff will do their best to maintain a calm and patient-friendly atmosphere.

    Staff Benefits and Future Improvements

The renovations will not only benefit patients but also the healthcare workers at FERH:

    • Improved Working Conditions: Healthcare professionals will have access to modern equipment and facilities. This will enhance their ability to provide high-quality care.
    • Increased Job Satisfaction: A more comfortable and efficient work environment is expected to improve job satisfaction and staff morale. This, in turn, will benefit patient care.

    A Commitment to Healthcare Excellence

The renovation of FERH’s A&E Unit is part of a larger initiative by the Gauteng Department of Health to modernize public healthcare infrastructure across the province. Recent improvements at the hospital include the establishment of new clinics, additional theatres, and upgraded wards. This ongoing development reflects the GDoH’s commitment to providing quality healthcare that meets the needs of the community.

The A&E Unit’s renovation is expected to set a new standard for emergency care in Springs. This will make the hospital better equipped to handle urgent cases efficiently and effectively.

    Preparing for the Changes

While the renovations at Far East Rand Hospital may cause some temporary disruptions, they represent an essential step towards improving emergency care services in the area. Patients can look forward to faster, more efficient care in a modern, upgraded facility once the work is completed in December 2025.

The GDoH urges the community to remain patient and supportive as these improvements take place, assuring them that the long-term benefits will be significant.
