Requirements for the Family Medicine Registrar Position

Educational and Professional Qualifications:

To qualify for the Family Medicine Registrar role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Grade 12 Certificate: A basic requirement for all applicants.
  2. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery Degree: This is essential for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
  3. HPCSA Registration: Applicants must have current registration for the 2025/6 financial year.
  4. Completed Community Service: One year of medical officer experience after completing community service.
  5. Experience: A minimum of one-year experience working as a Medical Officer is required.
  6. Valid Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is a must for rotating through the different service points.
  7. Registrars Joint Appointment: The appointment will be a joint appointment by the Gauteng Department of Health and the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide Medical Care: You will be responsible for interviewing, investigating, diagnosing, and managing patients.
  • Rotation Across Service Points: This includes clinics, hospitals, community-based services, and community-oriented primary care platforms in the district and at WITS.
  • Supervision: As a registrar, you will oversee undergraduate students, interns, community service doctors, and medical officers, ensuring that their clinical work meets the required standards.
  • Documentation: Proper record-keeping for all clinical work is essential, including completing medico-legal documents such as sick notes, admission discharges, and death certificates.

Academic and Professional Development:
