South African football fans have reason to celebrate as DStv has officially added select live French Ligue 1 McDonald’s football matches to its SuperSport line-up. This addition follows a new partnership between SuperSport and Canal+, the French media giant that recently became the majority owner of MultiChoice, DStv’s parent company.

This exciting move gives DStv subscribers access to some of Europe’s most thrilling football, featuring elite players, world-class clubs, and the signature flair of French football. For millions of fans across South Africa and the rest of the continent, it also represents another major boost to DStv’s already unmatched sports offering.

A New Era for SuperSport Viewers

SuperSport confirmed that it will now broadcast up to three Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches each weekend across its DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv platforms.

This means South African viewers can now tune in to watch France’s biggest football stars and clubs live – including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Marseille, Monaco, Lyon, and Lille – all from the comfort of their homes.

Moreover, the addition of Ligue 1 joins SuperSport’s already stacked line-up of global football competitions such as the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, and CAF tournaments.

    Why This Partnership Matters

The SuperSport–Canal+ partnership represents much more than just extra football coverage. It marks a major step in expanding the range of premium international content available to African viewers.

Canal+ is one of Europe’s most established entertainment companies, known for its extensive sports coverage and production quality. With its acquisition of MultiChoice, Canal+ brings not only French football but also a vast library of global and local content that will strengthen DStv’s offering in the months to come.

Furthermore, this collaboration is expected to improve access to diverse sports and entertainment for millions of households.

MultiChoice’s English sport content director, Rendani Ramovha, said the deal reflects DStv’s ongoing commitment to delivering world-class value:

“Broadcasting a prestigious league such as Ligue 1 only adds to the value that our subscribers receive. The calibre of football talent now available on SuperSport speaks for itself, and we are thrilled to add the French League to our premium sports catalogue.”

The Bigger Picture: Canal+’s Growing Influence on African TV

Since Canal+ officially took control of MultiChoice in 2025, the company has promised to unlock a new wave of entertainment opportunities across Africa.

Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot revealed that the company produces around 4,000 hours of African content annually, in as many as 15 different languages. This will be combined with MultiChoice’s 6,000 hours of local productions each year, creating one of the most diverse and extensive content catalogues on the continent.

    In addition, Mignot said:

“Combined, we will roughly provide 10,000 hours per year in 20 to 35 languages. In a 10- to 15-year period, we’re building a catalogue of 100,000 to 150,000 hours of content, which will be able to travel across the world.”

Therefore, the collaboration between Canal+ and MultiChoice isn’t just about football – it’s about building a stronger cultural exchange where African and European content coexist and thrive under one umbrella.

    The “Super App” Vision

Canal+ has also announced plans to launch a “super app” that will integrate all its entertainment platforms – including DStv, GOtv, Canal+, and Showmax – into a single digital ecosystem.

This app aims to make it easier and more convenient for subscribers to access all their favourite local and international content in one place.

Moreover, Canal+ CEO and chairman Maxime Sadaa said this new approach will create “a more pleasant and unified experience” for subscribers, while continuing to expand Canal+’s content aggregator strategy.

In other markets, Canal+ already offers bundled deals with popular streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Apple TV+, and Paramount+. If similar partnerships reach South Africa, DStv subscribers could soon enjoy access to an even broader range of global content – potentially at discounted rates.

Consequently, this development could redefine how African audiences experience television and streaming services.

A Win for African Football Fans

For South African football enthusiasts, this deal is a major win. Ligue 1 McDonald’s is one of Europe’s most technically gifted leagues – home to some of the sport’s most creative players and historic rivalries.

With this partnership, fans can look forward to watching:

    • Kylian Mbappé – PSG’s superstar forward
    • Ousmane Dembélé – 2024 Ballon d’Or winner
    • Wissam Ben Yedder – Monaco’s prolific striker
    • Alexandre Lacazette – Lyon’s veteran leader
    • Désiré Doué – Rennes’ rising talent

Additionally, the deal offers a new spotlight for African players competing in Ligue 1 – including several from Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast – helping to raise their profiles across the continent.

What This Means for DStv Subscribers

The addition of Ligue 1 reinforces DStv’s position as Africa’s leading sports broadcaster. With more live football, flexible streaming options via DStv Stream, and affordable viewing through GOtv, subscribers across income levels can enjoy top-tier sport without missing a moment.

Furthermore, this move shows that DStv is evolving with the times. As competition from global streaming services intensifies, Canal+’s expertise in content aggregation and DStv’s strong local presence position the company to offer more value, convenience, and variety than ever before.

As a result, subscribers can expect smoother access, improved streaming quality, and richer content in the future.

The arrival of live French Ligue 1 matches on SuperSport marks a new chapter in South African sports broadcasting. It’s not just about adding another league – it’s about expanding access to world-class football, enriching the viewing experience, and signalling the start of a deeper collaboration between Canal+ and MultiChoice.

For DStv subscribers, that means more live matches, more local and international entertainment, and more reasons to stay tuned in.

Ultimately, as this partnership develops, South African audiences can expect even more exciting additions – from expanded sports coverage to diverse African storytelling.
