Bavuma Thanks Fans After Proteas Get Grand Reception at OR Tambo

Temba Bavuma and his triumphant Proteas squad were met with thunderous applause and jubilant cheers upon their return to the country this week. The team, fresh from their historic World Test Championship (WTC) victory at Lord’s, were welcomed by a sea of green and gold at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday. Bavuma highlighted that it was only in that electrifying moment that the magnitude of their achievement truly hit home.
Thousands of enthusiastic supporters crammed into the arrivals hall to honour the national side. The fans brought home the first major ICC trophy since 1998. The Proteas captain admitted to being completely taken aback by the size and energy of the crowd.
“It was honestly overwhelming,” Bavuma said. “I’ve never seen a reception quite like that. This wasn’t like past tournaments—this time, there were so many smiling faces. It felt different in the best way possible.”
A Moment to Reflect
The Proteas’ long-awaited victory, which broke a 27-year championship drought, has sparked pride and celebration across the country. Bavuma shared how the reactions from the public helped put their feat into perspective.
“You don’t always grasp the impact while you’re in the moment,” he explained. “But when you return home and see the passion and hear the gratitude from the people, that’s when it sinks in. It gives real meaning to what we’ve accomplished.”
He further praised the unity within the squad, highlighting how their success reflected the spirit of the nation.
“This group of players, and the leadership guiding us, has achieved something truly South African. We’ve embraced our identity, and that’s made this journey even more meaningful.”
Praise from the Top
Among those lauding the team was Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie. He delivered heartfelt praise during the airport reception. He called Bavuma “the greatest South African captain in Test history” and head coach Shukri Conrad “the best cricket coach in the world.”
McKenzie acknowledged the broader impact of their WTC triumph. He noted that the Proteas had elevated national pride and unity during a difficult time.
“What you’ve done goes beyond cricket,” he said. “You’ve shown the world what we’re capable of. You are role models and champions in every sense.”
As a show of appreciation, McKenzie announced that the squad will have a special dinner with President Cyril Ramaphosa. This dinner will celebrate their global success.
Celebrations Continue in Sandton
For those who missed the welcome at OR Tambo, another celebration will take place on Thursday at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. Running from 1pm to 3pm, the event will give fans a second chance to interact with the Proteas heroes.
The first 100 supporters to arrive will receive an exclusive WTC Champions shirt. There will be additional spot prizes and giveaways on offer. One lucky fan will join the team on stage for a commemorative photo.
The outpouring of joy and support from the public reflects not only the relief of ending a long trophy drought. It also shows the admiration for a team that captured the nation’s heart. Temba Bavuma and the Proteas have become a symbol of hope, determination and national pride. These qualities resonated powerfully as they returned home champions.
