A 38 year old man kidnapped in the Johannesburg CBD has been rescued unharmed after police traced him to a plot in Randfontein, Gauteng, on Sunday, 4 October 2026. Five men were arrested following an intelligence driven investigation into the kidnapping, during which a ransom of $2 million was allegedly demanded from the victim’s family. The case also highlights what Gauteng residents should know about responding to an attempted kidnapping and preserving potentially useful information without putting themselves in greater danger.

The South African Police Service said the man was allegedly kidnapped in the Johannesburg CBD on 30 August 2026.

A kidnapping and extortion case was subsequently registered at Johannesburg Central Police Station.

Police trace kidnapped Johannesburg man to Randfontein

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a multidisciplinary team was assembled to locate the victim and identify those allegedly responsible.

The operation involved Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti Kidnapping team, the flying squad unit and private security companies.

According to Nevhuhulwi, the investigation resulted in three men being arrested on Sunday, 4 October.

The three suspects were allegedly found in possession of the cellphone used to contact the victim’s family and demand the ransom.

Further investigations then led officers to a plot in Randfontein.

The victim was found at the property and safely rescued.

Two additional suspects were arrested at the premises, bringing the total number of arrests to five.

All five suspects are expected to face kidnapping and extortion charges. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

    $2 million ransom allegedly demanded

According to police, the victim had been held since his alleged kidnapping on 30 August.

A ransom of $2 million was allegedly demanded for his release.

Police did not provide further details about whether any ransom money was paid before the victim was rescued.

The supplied information also does not disclose how the man was initially abducted in the Johannesburg CBD.

Police have not provided further details about the five suspects or their alleged individual roles in the kidnapping.

What should you do if someone tries to kidnap you?

There is no single response that will be safe in every kidnapping situation.

What a victim can do will depend on the circumstances, including whether the perpetrators are armed, whether the incident is happening in a public place and whether there is a realistic opportunity to reach safety.

    The priority is survival.

If an attempted abduction begins in a public place and there is a safe opportunity to attract attention or move towards other people before an attacker gains control, calling for help and moving towards a populated or secure area may assist.

Once a victim is under the control of armed or violent kidnappers, however, physically confronting them can increase the immediate danger.

Should you scratch a kidnapper or leave DNA evidence?

Physical and biological evidence can become important during a criminal investigation, but attempting to create evidence should never take priority over staying alive.

Scratching an attacker, pulling hair, biting or spitting could potentially leave biological or trace evidence.

However, deliberately doing this may provoke an attacker and increase the risk of violence.

A victim should therefore not place themselves in greater danger simply to try to leave DNA evidence.

If there is a safe opportunity to leave an identifiable personal item behind without attracting attention, that information could potentially assist investigators in establishing where a victim has been.

After a rescue or escape, victims should tell police about physical contact, injuries, vehicles, locations, objects touched and anything else they remember so investigators can determine what evidence may be available.

Details worth remembering if it is safe

A person being held against their will may be able to remember information that could later assist investigators.

Without unnecessarily confronting or drawing attention from captors, details may include:

    • Voices, accents or names used by suspects
    • The number of people involved
    • Clothing or distinguishing physical features
    • Vehicle type and noticeable vehicle details
    • Sounds heard during transportation
    • Approximate travelling times
    • Stops, turns or changes in road conditions
    • Sounds around the location where the victim is being held
    • Names, nicknames or places mentioned during conversations
    • Gates, rooms, buildings or other features of the location

Victims should not take unnecessary risks to obtain this information.

If you get an opportunity to escape

An opportunity to escape should be considered according to the immediate circumstances and whether there is a realistic route to safety.

If a victim manages to get away, reaching a populated or secure location and contacting emergency services should be the priority.

Information should then be provided to investigators as soon as possible.

Even details that initially appear insignificant could potentially help police piece together what happened.

In the Johannesburg kidnapping case, police said the investigation first led officers to three suspects allegedly in possession of the cellphone used for the ransom communication.

Further investigation then led the team to the Randfontein property where the victim was rescued.

Emergency numbers Gauteng residents should save

During a kidnapping, attempted abduction or other immediate threat, emergency services should be contacted as soon as it is safe to do so.

Important South African emergency numbers include:

    • SAPS emergency number: 10111
    • Emergency services from a cellphone: 112
    • Crime Stop: 08600 10111
    • Ambulance and fire services: 10177

When reporting an incident, provide as much information as possible about the location, people involved, vehicle and direction of travel.

Witnesses should not put themselves in danger by following suspected kidnappers or attempting to intervene physically.

Saving emergency numbers on a cellphone can also make them easier to access during an emergency.

What families should do after receiving a ransom demand

Families receiving a ransom demand should preserve communications connected to the kidnapping.

Messages, telephone numbers, call records and other communications could become relevant to an investigation.

In this case, police specifically said three suspects were found in possession of the cellphone allegedly used to contact the victim’s family and demand the ransom.

Families should provide available information to police and avoid conducting their own investigation, which could place them or the kidnapped person at further risk.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The case stretched across two areas of Gauteng, with the man allegedly kidnapped in the Johannesburg CBD before police eventually located him in Randfontein.

For residents, the case is a reminder that there is no universal response to an abduction.

There may be circumstances where attracting attention or escaping is possible. There may also be situations where physically confronting a violent or armed attacker could create greater danger.

    Survival should remain the priority.

Residents can also prepare by saving 10111, 112 and other emergency contacts on their phones and making sure family members know how to contact emergency services.
