South Africa Weather Today – Thursday, 4 June 2026

Johannesburg is experiencing light rain and temperatures between 10°C and 15°C this Thursday, as a cold front sweeps across the central interior. Rain is affecting Gauteng, the Free State and the Eastern Cape, while Limpopo and Mpumalanga remain dry and warmer. KwaZulu-Natal is sitting under cloud cover, and the Western Cape is seeing a breezy but relatively mild day with light cloud. The national average temperature is 15°C, marking a distinctly wintry day for much of the country.

What This Means for Your Day

Pack an umbrella if you’re in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein or Gqeberha, where light rain is expected throughout the day. Motorists should take care on wet roads, particularly during the morning and afternoon rush. Dress warmly in the Free State and Northern Cape, where temperatures are struggling to reach the mid-teens. If you’re in Mbombela or Polokwane, conditions are milder and drier, but a jacket will still be needed this evening as temperatures drop. Coastal areas should prepare for brisk south-easterly winds, especially around Cape Town.

    South Africa Weather Highlights

    • Warmest region: Mpumalanga, with Mbombela reaching 27°C under broken clouds
    • Coolest minimums: Free State and Northern Cape, both dropping to 8°C overnight
    • Wettest areas: Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape experiencing light rain
    • Windiest conditions: Cape Town recording gusts up to 35 km/h from the south-east

    Gauteng

Johannesburg is seeing light rain with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C. Winds are blowing from the north-northwest at 27 km/h, and humidity is sitting at 57%. The rain is expected to clear by early evening, but roads will remain wet and slippery. Pretoria is experiencing similar conditions. Keep your windscreen wipers in good order and allow extra travel time.

    Free State

Bloemfontein is recording light rain with a high of just 13°C and a low of 8°C. Humidity has climbed to 81%, and north-westerly winds are gusting at 21 km/h. The rain is contributing to cold, damp conditions that will persist into the evening. Indoor heating will be necessary, and outdoor activities should be postponed where possible.

    Eastern Cape

Gqeberha is under light rain with temperatures between 15°C and 16°C. South-easterly winds are blowing at 24 km/h, and humidity is at 77%. The wet weather is affecting much of the coastal strip, so expect grey skies and occasional drizzle. East London and Mthatha are seeing similar conditions. Drivers should reduce speed on the N2 and other major routes.

    KwaZulu-Natal

Durban is experiencing broken clouds with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 21°C. South-westerly winds are moderate at 15 km/h, and humidity is recorded at 69%. While rain is holding off for now, cloud cover is keeping temperatures slightly cooler than usual for this time of year. Pietermaritzburg is also cloudy, with a similar temperature range.

    Limpopo

Polokwane is enjoying clear skies with temperatures between 11°C and 22°C. North-northwesterly winds are brisk at 30 km/h, but the dry, sunny conditions make for a far more comfortable day than in the southern provinces. Humidity is low at 40%, and visibility is excellent. It’s one of the warmer spots in the country today, though evenings will still be chilly.

    Mpumalanga

Mbombela is the warmest city today, with temperatures climbing from 13°C to 27°C under broken clouds. North-easterly winds are light at 7 km/h, and humidity is a comfortable 36%. The Lowveld is significantly warmer and drier than the Highveld, making it an outlier in today’s national pattern. Nelspruit and surrounding areas are ideal for outdoor work, though a light jacket will be needed in the morning.

    North West

Mahikeng is recording broken clouds with temperatures between 10°C and 16°C. West-northwesterly winds are blowing at 28 km/h, and humidity is at 52%. While rain is not expected, the cloud cover and wind are contributing to a cool, overcast day. Rustenburg is seeing similar conditions, with a chance of isolated showers in the evening.

    Northern Cape

Kimberley is sitting under scattered clouds with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 13°C. Westerly winds are gusting at 28 km/h, and humidity is moderate at 53%. It’s a dry but cold day across the province, with the wind adding a noticeable chill factor. Upington is slightly warmer, but still well below 20°C. Layer up if you’re spending time outdoors.

    Western Cape

Cape Town is experiencing a few clouds with temperatures between 14°C and 16°C. South-easterly winds are strong at 35 km/h, making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Humidity is at 65%, and pressure is high at 1022 hPa, indicating stable conditions. Stellenbosch and the Winelands are seeing similar weather, with the wind likely to persist into the evening. Secure outdoor furniture and avoid exposed coastal paths.

    Weekend Outlook

Friday will bring colder conditions to Gauteng, with Johannesburg dropping to a minimum of 5°C under clear skies and a maximum of just 12°C. Saturday and Sunday will see a gradual warming trend, with temperatures climbing back to 14°C and 17°C respectively. Cloud cover will increase again by Monday. The Western Cape and Eastern Cape can expect dry, windy conditions through the weekend, while Mpumalanga and Limpopo will remain the warmest regions. Pack warm clothing if you’re planning outdoor activities on Friday morning.

    • Drive carefully on wet roads, especially during peak traffic hours
    • Dress in layers to cope with temperature swings between morning lows and afternoon highs
    • Secure loose items in Cape Town and other coastal areas due to strong south-easterly winds
