Thousands of Johannesburg commuters who rely on Metrobus services will face reduced bus frequencies from 1 June 2026 after Metrobus announced temporary service reductions across selected routes. The City of Johannesburg-owned bus operator says the changes are being introduced because of ongoing financial constraints and rising diesel costs.

While no routes will be completely discontinued at this stage, commuters can expect fewer buses during off-peak hours, particularly during midday periods. Metrobus says peak-hour services will remain prioritised to minimise disruption for workers, learners and vulnerable passengers.

The changes will remain in place for an undetermined period while the organisation reviews its financial position and operational sustainability.

ALS READ: Load Reduction Schedule for Gauteng: Areas Affected Between 1 and 7 June 2026

    Why Is Metrobus Reducing Services?

The organisation has experienced sustained budget reductions over several financial years.

The bus operator says the recent increase in diesel prices has further intensified financial pressures, making it difficult to maintain current service levels.

Metrobus stated that despite implementing cost-saving measures and operational efficiencies, temporary service reductions have become necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service.

The organisation says the adjustments are intended to prevent deeper financial instability while maintaining a transport network across Johannesburg.

    What Changes Will Commuters Notice?

The organization has confirmed several key service changes from 1 June:

    • Reduced off-peak services on selected routes
    • Fewer midday trips during low-demand periods
    • Peak-hour services will continue to receive priority
    • No full route closures have been announced
    • A reduced operational presence will remain on affected corridors

The operator says route and timetable updates will be available through Metrobus depots, terminals, onboard notices and official communication channels.

    Which Routes Are Affected?

Why Are Diesel Costs Such a Concern?

Diesel is one of the largest operating expenses for public transport operators.

Metrobus says the recent increase in diesel prices has significantly increased operational costs at a time when municipal budgets remain under pressure.

Public transport operators across South Africa have faced growing fuel costs, maintenance expenses and infrastructure challenges in recent years.

These costs have combined with budget reductions to create a situation where service adjustments are required.

What This Means for Johannesburg Commuters

The service reductions are expected to have the greatest impact on commuters who travel during off-peak hours.

Those likely to be affected include:

    • Shift workers travelling outside traditional peak periods
    • Pensioners attending appointments during the day
    • Students with irregular schedules
    • Residents making midday trips
    • Commuters travelling between Johannesburg and Tshwane corridors

Peak-hour commuters may experience less disruption because Metrobus has committed to prioritising services during busy morning and afternoon travel periods.

However, longer waiting times may still occur on affected routes.

How Long Will The Reductions Last?

The organization has not provided an end date for the service reductions.

The operator says the measures are temporary and will be reviewed as passenger demand and financial performance improve.

According to the notice, Metrobus will continuously monitor the impact of the changes and reassess services when conditions allow.

What Support Is Available To Commuters?

Metrobus says passengers can obtain updated route and timetable information through:

    • Metrobus depots and terminals
    • Onboard notices
    • Official Metrobus communication channels
    • The Metrobus website

The operator says customer support teams will continue assisting commuters throughout the transition period.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When do the Metrobus service reductions start?

The temporary service reductions will begin on 1 June 2026.

Are any Metrobus routes being cancelled?

No. Metrobus says there will be no full route closures at this stage.

    Which services are most affected?

The changes primarily affect off-peak and midday services on selected routes, including Gandhi to Parkhurst, Sunninghill, Petervale and Tshwane.

    Why is Metrobus reducing services?

According to Metrobus, ongoing budget reductions and rising diesel costs have made the reductions necessary.

    Will peak-hour buses still operate?

Yes. The opetator says peak-hour services will be prioritised to reduce disruption for workers, learners and vulnerable passengers.

    What Happens Next?

Metrobus says it will continue monitoring passenger demand and financial performance while the reduced schedule remains in place. The operator has indicated that services will be reviewed if its financial position improves, but no timeline has yet been provided for a return to normal operations.

For now, Johannesburg commuters using affected routes may need to adjust travel plans and allow additional time for journeys as the temporary service reductions take effect from 1 June 2026.
