Millions of Johannesburg residents are expected to face low water pressure or complete outages from 29 May 2026 as Rand Water begins a large scale maintenance programme affecting multiple systems across Gauteng. Johannesburg Water has warned that some communities could remain affected for several days even after maintenance work is completed.

The planned work will run from 29 May to 2 June 2026 and will affect areas supplied through the Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, Sandton, Central, Deep South and Commando systems. A second phase of maintenance is also scheduled for 17 July 2026.

Johannesburg Water said the maintenance forms part of efforts to improve reliability, plant efficiency and long term infrastructure stability across the province’s bulk water network.

Rand Water Maintenance to Affect Multiple Johannesburg Systems

According to Johannesburg Water, Rand Water will conduct maintenance work on the Vereeniging, Zuikerbosch and Zwartkopjes systems over a phased approach between May and July.

The utility said the maintenance is being carried out during winter because water demand is generally lower during colder months.

Johannesburg Water stated that the work aims to improve:

    • Infrastructure reliability
    • System efficiency
    • Water availability
    • Long term network flexibility

Officials warned that residents should prepare for reduced supply well before the maintenance begins.

Major Pump Stations to Be Affected

The biggest disruption is expected on 29 May when pumping at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station will be stopped completely between 07h00 and 19h00.

The Palmiet system supplies Johannesburg Water’s Midrand network.

Johannesburg Water confirmed the following maintenance schedule:

    Infrastructure/SystemDateImpact

July Maintenance to Bring Further Disruptions

A second round of maintenance is scheduled for 17 July 2026.

    According to Johannesburg Water:

    • Palmiet pumping will be reduced to 78%
    • Zwartkopjes pumping will be reduced to 50%
    • Eikenhof pumping will be reduced to 50%

The July phase is expected to affect:

    • Sandton
    • Linksfield
    • Randjeslaagte
    • Midrand
    • Soweto
    • Randburg
    • Roodepoort
    • Crown Gardens
    • Commando System areas

Johannesburg Water Warns Recovery Will Take Days

Johannesburg Water stressed that supply recovery may take several days after maintenance work has officially ended.

The utility warned that systems need time to refill and stabilise after large scale shutdowns.

    According to Johannesburg Water:

“Please note that after each maintenance has been completed, it will take several days for the system to fully recover, and for normal water supply to return.”

    Water Tankers to Be Deployed

Johannesburg Water said alternative water supply arrangements will be implemented in affected communities.

The utility confirmed that water tankers will be positioned at strategic points throughout affected areas during the shutdown period.

Ward councillors are also expected to assist with communication and coordination during the outages.

    Residents Urged to Prepare Early

Johannesburg Water urged residents not to wait until the last minute to prepare for the maintenance.

Officials warned that excessive water storage immediately before the shutdown could place additional strain on the system.

    Residents were encouraged to:

    • Store water in advance
    • Use water sparingly
    • Avoid unnecessary water consumption
    • Prepare for extended recovery periods

How Residents Can Protect Appliances During Water Interruptions

Infrastructure specialists say prolonged outages and pressure fluctuations can sometimes affect household appliances and plumbing systems.

    Residents are encouraged to:

    • Switch off electric geysers during prolonged outages
    • Turn off washing machines and dishwashers when pressure drops
    • Close taps before supply restoration
    • Protect booster pumps from running dry
    • Store separate clean drinking water supplies

Pressure surges when water returns may damage appliances connected directly to municipal water systems.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The large scale maintenance programme highlights the increasing pressure on Gauteng’s ageing water infrastructure systems.

For residents, the interruptions could affect:

    • Daily household activities
    • Schools and healthcare facilities
    • Businesses and restaurants
    • Informal settlements
    • Traffic near tanker points
    • High density residential communities

Residents in higher lying areas may experience longer recovery periods depending on pumping capacity and system pressure.
