Public fitness events have become increasingly popular across Gauteng. One of the most iconic gatherings is the annual 702 Walk the Talk. This event draws thousands of participants, offering multiple walking distances. It promotes both physical health and social cohesion. Such events play a crucial role in reducing health risks. They counter the dangers associated with sedentary lifestyles and chronic diseases in the province.

Curious why Health’s top official is hitting the streets with community members? Gauteng’s MEC for Health Participates in Annual 702 Walk the Talk. Click to read about the challenges raised and the causes championed during the 2025 walk initiative.

The Significance of the 702 Walk the Talk

The 702 Walk the Talk, held in 2025 on 27 July at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng, is a prime example of a community-driven fitness event. Participants can select from an 8 km challenge walk, a 6.7 km Mandela Month tribute, or a shorter 4 km walk. These options accommodate a wide range of fitness levels and ages. The event combines physical activity with cultural and historical experiences. This combination strengthens its appeal and community impact.

Organised by Gauteng Tourism and various stakeholders, this event attracts thousands. It creates a festive atmosphere that encourages active lifestyles across demographics.

Addressing Health Risks through Community Walking Events

Sedentary behavior is a major contributor to increasing health risks. Problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension are common in South Africa and Gauteng specifically. Public fitness events like the 702 Walk the Talk counter these risks by:

    • Encouraging regular physical activity: Walking is accessible, low-impact, and suitable for almost all ages.
    • Promoting social interaction: Group participation fosters motivation and creates support networks, improving mental well-being.
    • Increasing awareness: Events aligned with causes like Mandela Month also promote holistic health awareness and inspire healthier lifestyle choices.

Studies show that incorporating moderate-intensity physical activities, such as brisk walking, for at least 150 minutes weekly can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Sthembiso Dlamini, CEO of Gauteng Tourism Authority, highlighted the role of the 702 Walk the Talk in promoting sports, wellness, and community spirit. He remarked:
“This event brings together people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of community, shared purpose and value as espoused in the constitution. We encourage everyone to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Public Fitness Events and Mental Health Benefits

Exercise events such as the 702 Walk promote mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. The collective spirit of such events enhances feelings of unity and belonging. Walking past historic landmarks in Tshwane adds cultural enrichment, deepening participants’ connection to their heritage and community.

    Participant Statistics and Event Scale:

    • The 2025 702 Walk the Talk took place on Sunday, 27 July 2025, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng.
    • This edition attracted thousands of participants choosing from three distances: 8 km, 6.7 km (Mandela Month tribute), and 4 km walks.
    • Entry fees ranged between R300 to R360 for adults, with discounted rates for children and free participation for children under 3, accompanied by adults.
    • Despite no parking at the start or finish points, Park & Ride facilities facilitated easy access for participants from Pretoria and Johannesburg.
    • Historically, the event has drawn large crowds. Previous editions attracted over 38,000 walkers, making it one of Gauteng’s biggest fitness events.

    Health Impact and Community Benefits:

    • The event encourages physical activity among all ages and fitness levels. This aligns with global health recommendations for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly to reduce risks of chronic diseases.
    • Beyond physical benefits, the walk fosters mental well-being by promoting social interaction, community unity, and stress reduction. This is achieved through collective participation in a culturally meaningful setting.
    • Gauteng Tourism Authority emphasises the event’s contribution to social cohesion. It promotes unity, inclusivity, and healthy living as part of the “Asibe Healthy GP” initiative.

All 15,000+ of you showed up and walked the talk and we felt every step! 🙌
Thank you for making it unforgettable. See you at the next one! 👟❤️#702WTT #702WalkTheTalk#discoverfreedompark pic.twitter.com/alTLHNDGaP

    Community Engagement and Inclusivity

The Walk the Talk event emphasises inclusivity by offering multiple distances to cater to different ages and fitness levels. This includes family-friendly options and wheelchair-accessible routes. Children under 3 years can participate for free when accompanied by an adult. This encourages family involvement and early adoption of healthy habits.

The event also provides Park & Ride facilities to ensure accessibility and minimise logistical barriers for participants, further boosting community participation.

Broader Impact on Gauteng’s Healthcare System

By fostering healthier lifestyles, public fitness events contribute to reducing the burden on the healthcare system. Preventing and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through community exercise can lower medical costs and improve quality of life.

Events like the 702 Walk the Talk exemplify proactive public health measures. They support Gauteng’s goals to improve wellness and build resilient communities.

    Sustaining Momentum

Continued support for and investment in public fitness events are essential for maintaining momentum in health promotion efforts. Collaboration between government bodies, tourism authorities, health organisations, and communities will enhance the reach and sustainability of such initiatives.

Gauteng residents are encouraged to participate actively in future events like the 702 Walk. By doing so, they can enjoy physical, mental, and social benefits, helping reduce health risks throughout the province.
