Tshwane, – The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) the official destination marketing agency for the Gauteng City Region is delighted to announce its expert hosting and participation in the iconic 702 Walk-The-Talk event at the country’s vibrant capital city, Tshwane. This prestigious event, scheduled for Sunday 28TH July 2024, is expected to attract over 40,000 participants, including the esteemed presence of the State President Mr. Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, marking a significant occasion for the city and our golden province.
The 702 Walk the Talk is more than just a walking event; it is a symbol of unity and an opportunity to showcase Tshwane as a premier destination for major events. Hosting this renowned event underscores Gauteng’s commitment to promoting sports and wellness, which are vital components in enhancing the visitor economy, creating jobs, and building a competitive destination brand.
The socio-economic benefits of hosting the 702 Walk the Talk are substantial. The influx of participants and spectators will provide a significant boost to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets. The last edition of this event in Maropeng generated over R37million in weekend accommodation bookings, food, entertainment, transportation and related auxiliary services making the visitor economy value-chain.
It is estimated that the event will generate considerably more value and revenue this time around noting the vast nature of the city of Tshwane, its iconic beauty and expected more participants thus contributing to the local economy and supporting job creation efforts across various sectors.
The presence of the State President further elevates the event’s profile, attracting media attention and reinforcing the significance of sports and wellness events in promoting a vibrant visitor economy and Gauteng as the home of champions and mecca of quality high-impact events.
Beyond the economic impact, the 702 Walk the Talk plays a crucial role in driving social cohesion especially as the country mark the 30 years anniversary of our democracy and freedom. “The event brings together people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of community, shared purpose and value as espoused in the constitution. This year’s event is particularly special as it honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his unwavering dedication to reconciliation and unity. The walk will commence at reconciliation road within the Freedom Park Heritage Site, a symbolic starting point reflecting our nations journey towards harmony.
The capital city’s top historical and heritage attractions will be in the spotlight as walkers immerse themselves at over 10 attractions on the route that commemorates Mzansi’s journey to freedom. Starting at the idyllic Freedom Park Heritage Site, the walk will pass some of the city’s unique sites and finishes off at the Southern Lawns of the gracious Union Buildings. This is the route which Nelson Mandela body followed daily in route to Union Building to lay in state in December 2013.
