Themed around the late 19th-century Johannesburg gold rush, Gold Reef City is an entertainment complex that comprises a theme park, casino, hotel and entertainment centre. History, adventure and entertainment all come together at the complex, which is situated on the edge of one of the city’s oldest gold mines, located 8km from the Johannesburg CBD and 20 minutes’ drive from OR Tambo International Airport.
Theme park
The Gold Reef City theme park has some of the biggest and scariest roller coasters in Africa. The most hair-raising is the Tower of Terror, which has a 50m drop, speeds of 100km/h and is rated with a “fear factor” of 10 out of 10. Another thrilling ride is the Anaconda, which is built in the shape of an anaconda snake, and is an inverted corkscrew rollercoaster with a fear factor of nine out of 10.
The theme park is a popular place for a family day out and there are rides for all ages, including the Fun Train, Giant Wheel, Lazy Boats, Log Ride and Wave Swing. Rides for smaller kids include the Dragon Ride, Balloon Wheel and Carousel. The theme park also includes a fun recreation of an old 19th-century mining village, where you can step back in time to the heady days of the Johannesburg gold rush.
