Tyla Seethal, the South African music sensation now known globally as Tyla, launched her career in the hallways and classrooms of Edenglen High School in the East Rand of Gauteng. Long before she sang for millions, Tyla explored her artistic side as a talented painter and performer. Today, her journey from local schoolgirl to international Grammy winner inspires young artists across the country and beyond.

Early Years and Artistic Talent at Edenglen

Tyla started at Edenglen High School with a passion for art visible to everyone around her. She brought imaginative drawings to life and impressed her teachers with work that stood out from her peers. She also showed early promise as a singer and dancer, participating eagerly in school shows and talent competitions. The school became a creative springboard, offering Tyla the space to develop her talents.

As Vanessa Munro, Tyla’s matric art teacher, recalls: “You could see the creative process in everything she did. She was not afraid to experiment. She painted things out of her box.” Munro notes that Tyla’s confidence set her apart from the start, and her distinctive style made her work memorable long after she left.

Blending Art and Music: A Creative Dual Focus

While Tyla’s music career has now taken the spotlight, her early experience as a painter shaped her artistic vision. She often combined her love of visual art with her passion for music, using both to express herself. This dual focus helped her develop a unique creative voice, one that later shone through in her songwriting and performances.

Her time at Edenglen High School allowed Tyla to refine her skills in both visual and performing arts. She learned to blend colours on canvas and melodies in music, building a foundation that would later help her stand out on the world stage.

The Journey from School Shows to Global Stardom

After matriculating, Tyla moved to Johannesburg to pursue opportunities in entertainment. She started posting covers online, quickly gaining attention with her fresh sound and energetic videos. Unlike many young artists, Tyla knew that success would require more than talent it would demand hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn.

Her persistence paid off. In 2023, her single “Water” became a global hit, sparking viral dance challenges and earning a Grammy for Best African Music Performance. This achievement marked a turning point, not just for Tyla, but for South African artists everywhere. She became the first solo South African artist to win a Grammy in nearly three decades, proving that dreams born in Gauteng classrooms can reach the world’s biggest stages.

The Influence of Support and Community

Behind Tyla’s rise lies the influence of supportive teachers, family, and a nurturing school environment. Edenglen High School staff played a meaningful role, encouraging Tyla to develop her gifts and follow her interests. As Vanessa Munro notes: “She was always confident. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind in class. She owned the room and was true to herself, a really creative, imaginative young lady.”

This encouragement gave Tyla the confidence to experiment, both in art and music, and to pursue her passions without fear.

Behind Tyla’s remarkable rise to stardom lies the powerful influence of a supportive community teachers, family, and schoolmates who nurtured her unique talents and ambitions. Edenglen High School in Johannesburg’s East Rand was more than just a place of learning it was an incubator for creativity, where staff and educators like Vanessa Munro, Tyla’s matric art teacher, encouraged students to speak their minds and pursue their passions.

Munro recalls, “She was always confident. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind in class. She owned the room and was true to herself, a really creative, imaginative young lady.” This positive reinforcement gave Tyla the freedom to experiment with both art and music, shaping her distinctive creative voice.

Tyla’s journey shows that success in the arts is rarely achieved alone. Teachers who foster creativity, families who cheer from the sidelines, and communities that celebrate achievement all play crucial roles in shaping young artists.

Lessons for Aspiring South African Artists

Tyla’s story offers valuable lessons for young South Africans with creative dreams. Her journey shows that diverse artistic interests can enrich each other. It also highlights the importance of support from teachers, family, and community.

Her success demonstrates that talent, hard work, and self-belief can open doors, even when the path seems uncertain. For students in Gauteng and beyond, Tyla’s experience is proof that the world will listen if you dare to express yourself.

    Tyla’s Ongoing Impact

Tyla’s artistic journey reminds us that creativity knows no limits. Her Grammy win not only celebrates her personal achievement but also shines a spotlight on South Africa’s vibrant arts scene. As Tyla continues to grow her career, she encourages others to explore their own passions, whether with a paintbrush, a microphone, or both.
