South African motorists could be paying significantly more at the pumps from Wednesday, 2 September 2026, as the latest fuel price forecasts point to substantial increases for both petrol and diesel. The projected increases follow continued volatility in international oil markets, driven largely by ongoing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to global oil supplies. For Gauteng residents who rely heavily on private vehicles, public transport and commercial road freight, higher fuel prices are likely to place additional pressure on household budgets and business operating costs.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the official payment dates for social grants in September 2026, giving millions of beneficiaries across Gauteng and South Africa certainty ahead of the new month. Payments for Older Persons Grants will begin on Wednesday, 2 September, followed by Disability Grants on Thursday, 3 September and Children’s Grants on Friday, 4 September. SASSA has also reminded beneficiaries that Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant payments follow a separate payment schedule later in the month and encouraged recipients to use its new WhatsApp self service platform for grant related enquiries.
