South Africa Weather Today – Tuesday, 12 May 2026

Johannesburg woke to clear skies on Tuesday morning, with temperatures ranging between 7°C and 18°C as a stable high-pressure system settled across the interior. The national weather pattern shows a sharp divide: the interior provinces are experiencing dry, sunny conditions with cool mornings, while the coastal regions of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape are being lashed by moderate rainfall and strengthening winds. The national average temperature stands at 17°C.

What This Means for Your Day

Morning commuters in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein should dress warmly for single-digit temperatures that will climb steadily through the day. Residents in Cape Town and Gqeberha need to prepare for wet conditions throughout the day, with rainfall expected to continue into the evening. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will see the warmest daytime highs, ideal for outdoor activities after midday. Those in the Free State and Northern Cape should monitor wind conditions, as gusts reaching 24 to 25 km/h may affect outdoor plans.

    South Africa Weather Highlights

    • Mpumalanga records the highest temperature at 30°C in Mbombela
    • Moderate rain affecting Cape Town and Gqeberha with temperatures stuck at 16–17°C
    • Interior provinces experiencing crisp mornings with Gauteng and North West dropping to 7°C
    • Strong westerly winds in the Northern Cape and Free State reaching 24–25 km/h

    Gauteng

Johannesburg and Pretoria are enjoying clear skies with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 18°C. The dry conditions and moderate south-westerly winds at 15 km/h make for comfortable daytime weather once the morning chill lifts. Humidity sits at 47%, ensuring a pleasant afternoon for outdoor activities. Residents should layer clothing for the morning commute and be ready to shed layers by midday.

    Western Cape

Cape Town is experiencing moderate rainfall with temperatures holding steady between 16°C and 17°C. North-westerly winds at 16 km/h are accompanying the rain, and humidity has climbed to 95%. Roads may be slick, and visibility could be reduced during heavier downpours. Motorists should allow extra travel time and ensure headlights are on. The rain is expected to persist through the afternoon.

    Eastern Cape

Gqeberha is also under moderate rain with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 16°C. West-south-westerly winds are blowing at 24 km/h, adding to the unpleasant conditions. Humidity stands at 93%, making the air feel damp and cool. Coastal activities should be postponed, and residents are advised to stay indoors where possible. The rain system affecting the Western Cape is extending into this region.

    KwaZulu-Natal

Durban and surrounding areas are under overcast skies with temperatures between 19°C and 27°C. North-north-easterly winds at 12 km/h are keeping conditions relatively mild despite the cloud cover. Humidity is at 36%, which is lower than the coastal norm. While rain is not expected, the clouds will block sunshine throughout the day. Beach conditions remain safe but less appealing under grey skies.

    Free State

Bloemfontein is seeing scattered clouds with temperatures from 8°C to 17°C. West-north-westerly winds are gusting at 24 km/h, making it feel cooler than the actual temperature. Humidity is at 58%, and the cloud cover may thicken during the afternoon. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and dress for wind chill, particularly during the morning and evening hours.

    Mpumalanga

Mbombela is experiencing the warmest conditions in the country with clear skies and temperatures climbing from 16°C to 30°C. West-south-westerly winds at 17 km/h are keeping the air fresh despite the heat. Humidity is low at 28%, meaning the warmth will feel dry rather than oppressive. Sun protection is essential, and outdoor workers should stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded areas.

    Limpopo

Polokwane enjoys clear skies with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 24°C. South-westerly winds at 21 km/h are slightly stronger than in neighbouring provinces. Humidity is at 41%, ensuring comfortable conditions once the morning coolness dissipates. The combination of sunshine and moderate winds makes this an ideal day for outdoor activities, though sun protection remains important.

    North West

Mahikeng is experiencing clear skies with temperatures between 7°C and 21°C. Westerly winds at 11 km/h are gentler than in surrounding areas. Humidity stands at 50%, and conditions are dry throughout the day. Farmers and outdoor workers will benefit from the stable weather, though morning frost is possible in low-lying areas.

    Northern Cape

Kimberley has a few clouds scattered across the sky with temperatures from 9°C to 19°C. West-north-westerly winds are blowing at 25 km/h, the strongest in the interior. Humidity is at 51%, and while rain is not expected, the wind will make it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests. Secure outdoor furniture and be cautious if driving high-sided vehicles.

    Weekend Outlook

The weekend forecast for Johannesburg shows a gradual warming trend with clear skies continuing through Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will climb to a high of 20°C by Saturday, with overnight lows lifting to 12°C. The Western Cape and Eastern Cape should see an improvement as the rain system moves offshore, allowing drier conditions to return by Friday. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will maintain warm, sunny weather throughout the weekend, while the interior provinces can expect pleasant mid-May conditions.

    Weather Tips for Today

    • Layer clothing in Gauteng, North West, and Free State to manage cool mornings and mild afternoons
    • Carry an umbrella and waterproof jacket in Cape Town and Gqeberha
    • Apply high-SPF sunscreen in Mpumalanga and Limpopo where UV levels will be elevated
    • Secure loose items outdoors in the Northern Cape and Free State due to strong winds

    • Stay hydrated in Mpumalanga where temperatures will reach 30°C
