Johannesburg will reach a high of 19°C under clear skies this Sunday, with temperatures dropping to 10°C overnight. South Africa is experiencing a split weather pattern, with warm to hot conditions across the northeast and coastal KwaZulu-Natal, while the Western Cape faces light rain and cooler temperatures. The national average temperature sits at 17°C, with KwaZulu-Natal recording the country’s highest maximum at 33°C in Durban.

Sunday brings favourable conditions for most of the country. The interior provinces can expect clear to partly cloudy skies with moderate temperatures, ideal for outdoor plans. KwaZulu-Natal’s coastal heat will require sun protection, while Cape Town residents should carry rain gear as showers persist through the day. Strong winds exceeding 50 km/h in the Northern Cape and Free State may create hazardous driving conditions on exposed routes.

    South Africa Weather Highlights

    • Hottest region: KwaZulu-Natal, Durban reaching 33°C
    • Warmest inland: Mpumalanga, Mbombela at 30°C
    • Coolest province: Free State with a low of 8°C in Bloemfontein
    • Only rainfall: Western Cape, Cape Town experiencing light rain
    • Strongest winds: Northern Cape, Kimberley at 52 km/h from the west-northwest

    Gauteng

Johannesburg will see clear skies with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 19°C. North-northwest winds at 27 km/h will keep conditions fresh throughout the day. Humidity sits at 46%, making for comfortable outdoor conditions. The clear weather will continue into Monday, though temperatures are expected to dip slightly to a maximum of 15°C.

    KwaZulu-Natal

Durban will experience the country’s warmest conditions today, with temperatures climbing from 17°C to 33°C under clear skies. Northerly winds at 29 km/h will provide some relief from the heat. Residents should apply sun protection during peak UV hours. Humidity stands at 49%, typical for coastal conditions in early autumn.

    Western Cape

Cape Town is the only major centre receiving rainfall today, with light rain and temperatures between 13°C and 15°C. Westerly winds at 31 km/h will accompany the showers. Humidity reaches 82%, the highest in the country. Residents should prepare for wet conditions throughout Sunday, though skies are expected to clear by early next week.

    Mpumalanga

Mbombela will see few clouds and temperatures from 14°C to 30°C, making it the second-warmest city today. Light north-northeast winds at 6 km/h will keep conditions calm. The Lowveld region will experience typical late-autumn warmth, with humidity at 41% ensuring comfortable conditions despite the heat.

    Limpopo

Polokwane will have scattered clouds with temperatures ranging from 11°C to 25°C. North-northwest winds at 25 km/h will move through the province. Humidity at 54% is the highest among inland provinces, though conditions remain pleasant. The partly cloudy skies will provide occasional shade from the autumn sun.

    North West

Mahikeng will enjoy clear skies and temperatures between 13°C and 22°C. Strong northwest winds at 36 km/h will dominate the province. Humidity remains low at 41%, contributing to dry conditions. Residents in exposed areas should secure outdoor items against the persistent winds.

    Free State

Bloemfontein will see few clouds with temperatures from 8°C to 17°C, making it one of the cooler centres today. Northwest winds will reach 51 km/h, the second-strongest in the country. Morning temperatures will require warm layers, while the strong winds will create challenging conditions for outdoor activities and road travel.

    Northern Cape

Kimberley will experience clear skies and temperatures between 9°C and 17°C. West-northwest winds at 52 km/h will be the strongest recorded nationally today. Humidity drops to 31%, the lowest in South Africa. The combination of wind and low humidity will create high fire danger conditions in grassland areas.

    Eastern Cape

Gqeberha will have broken clouds with temperatures from 15°C to 20°C. Northwest winds at 43 km/h will keep coastal areas breezy. Humidity stands at 48%. The cloud cover will provide a buffer from direct sun, though the strong winds may affect beachgoers and outdoor events along the coast.

    Weekend Outlook

The remainder of the weekend will see Cape Town’s rain clearing by evening, leaving most of the country dry overnight. Monday will bring cooler conditions to Gauteng, with Johannesburg dropping to a maximum of 15°C under continued clear skies. The hot conditions in KwaZulu-Natal will persist, while the Western Cape can expect improving weather as the rain system moves east. Wind speeds will ease across the interior provinces by Monday morning.

    Weather Tips for Today

    • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga where UV exposure will be high
    • Secure loose outdoor items in the Northern Cape, Free State and North West due to strong winds
    • Carry an umbrella or waterproof jacket in the Western Cape throughout the day
    • Layer clothing in the Free State and Northern Cape where morning temperatures drop below 10°C
    • Drive cautiously on exposed highways in provinces experiencing winds above 40 km/h
    • Stay hydrated in Durban and Mbombela where temperatures exceed 30°C
