Nkosinathi Sibisi Named New Orlando Pirates Captain Ahead of 2025/26 Season

Orlando Pirates have officially ushered in a new chapter of leadership by confirming Nkosinathi Sibisi as the club’s new captain for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign. The announcement ends speculation following the departure of former skipper Innocent Maela. Maela had led the team since 2022 before hanging up his boots at the end of last season.
Maela’s exit not only leaves a legacy of commitment and composure but also a void. The club has now filled it with another dependable figure at the back. Sibisi, a defender known for his consistency, discipline and leadership qualities, was the players’ clear favourite. The players selected him through Pirates’ traditional confidential voting process.
The Players’ Choice: Sibisi Steps Up
At 29 years old, Sibisi isn’t new to the armband. He often stepped into the role in Maela’s absence over the past two seasons. He even recently captained Bafana Bafana in international friendlies. His leadership skills were recognised on a broader scale when he was named Betway Premiership Defender of the Season. He beat top-tier defenders such as Grant Kekana and Thabo Moloisane.
Reacting to his appointment, a humbled Sibisi shared:
“It’s a huge privilege to be named captain of a club with such a rich history. I take on the responsibility with full commitment and promise to lead with honour and passion.”
Before joining the Buccaneers, Sibisi was also captain at Golden Arrows, further cementing his credentials as a natural leader.
Xoki and Mbokazi Take Vice-Captain Roles
Supporting Sibisi in the Pirates leadership structure are Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who have been named as vice-captains. The club sees their appointments as a move to strengthen the team’s internal structure. This will ensure continuity and support within the squad.
Both players are respected voices in the dressing room. They bring a balance of experience and drive, which will be vital as the Buccaneers look to challenge on all fronts in the new season.
Leadership Built on Respect and Unity
The Soweto giants have long held the belief that leaders should emerge from within. Once again, this principle was upheld, with the playing squad tasked with voting for the new captain. This move reinforces trust and unity among the players.
“The appointment of the new captain and vice-captains was done through a confidential ballot, in line with our tradition of player-driven leadership,” the club said in an official statement.
With the players’ full backing, the new leadership trio now carry the weight of expectation. They will guide the Sea Robbers into the 2025/26 season.
All Eyes on MTN8 Quarter-Final
Sibisi’s first test as official captain comes this weekend when Pirates take on Polokwane City FC in the MTN8 quarter-final at Orlando Stadium. The fixture marks a high-stakes start for the new skipper. Sibisi will be eager to inspire his team to an early trophy push.
Meanwhile, Maela, though no longer on the pitch, will remain within the Pirates fold. He is reportedly set to take on a non-playing role at the club. His presence behind the scenes is expected to further strengthen the team’s foundation.
Sibisi Era Begins with High Hopes
With his defensive prowess, calm demeanour, and prior leadership experience, Sibisi seems well-placed to lead the Buccaneers into a promising new campaign. The appointment of Xoki and Mbokazi completes a well-rounded leadership team. They are ready to shoulder the pressures and ambitions of a club chasing glory.
