Rahima Moosa Hospital Emergency Department Gets a Major Upgrade

A Landmark Transformation at Rahima Moosa Hospital

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is celebrating a significant milestone with the ongoing renovation of the Emergency Department (ED) at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH). This initiative reflects the province’s ongoing commitment to improving public health infrastructure. It also enhances the quality of healthcare services for its residents.

The project, which officially began on 25 August 2025, is expected to be completed by July 2026. The renovations will enhance the hospital’s capacity to handle emergency cases. This ensures that it remains a key healthcare hub in Gauteng, particularly for mothers and children.

Ensuring Continuity of Care During Renovations

To ensure that emergency services remain uninterrupted during this major renovation, the hospital has taken proactive steps. The Emergency Department (ED) has been temporarily relocated to the Paediatric Out-Patients Department (POPD) area. Meanwhile, the POPD triage unit has been moved to a park home on the hospital grounds. This shift ensures that essential services are not disrupted while work continues.

In addition, patients arriving via ambulance or emergency drop-off will now be directed to Gate 1. This gate is closer to the temporary ED location, instead of the usual Gate 3. This adjustment will help manage patient flow and minimize disruptions during the renovation process.

Managing Patient Flow and Safety

Given the limited space in the temporary consultation and waiting areas, the hospital has introduced new measures to maintain patient safety. They also aim to streamline services. For example, only one caregiver per child will be allowed during consultations. Additionally, elderly patients requiring assistance may be accompanied by one support person.

These temporary arrangements are designed to reduce congestion and ensure that patients receive the care they need in a safe, efficient manner. The GDoH has appealed to all families and visitors to cooperate with these measures. This cooperation is important to maintain smooth operations during this important phase of transformation.

The Broader Impact of the Renovation

The renovations at Rahima Moosa Hospital form part of a broader program of infrastructure upgrades. This program aims to improve public health services across Gauteng. In addition to the ongoing work at the Emergency Department, several other key areas of the hospital are being refurbished. These include:

  • Wards 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • The Labour Ward
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Improvements have also been made to ablution facilities and antenatal care areas. This further enhances the overall experience for patients and their families.

Enhancing Operational Efficiency

As part of the upgrade, the hospital is addressing several operational efficiency concerns through various maintenance projects. These include:

  • The diversion of sewerage lines to open channels
  • Waterproofing hospital roofs to prevent leaks
  • Repairing hot water systems and servicing calorifiers
  • Ensuring that backup generators are fully functional

Renovations and repainting have also been carried out in areas such as the admissions area, paediatric OPD rooms, and the discharge lounge. These changes ensure that the spaces are clean, safe, and welcoming for all patients.

Strengthening Security Measures

To ensure that all patients and staff are safe during the renovation process, security measures at the hospital have been strengthened. The installation of additional surveillance cameras and the implementation of lockable entrances and exits will help maintain a secure environment. These measures are active throughout the upgrade.

These measures are crucial in ensuring that the hospital remains a safe and functional space for everyone, even as the renovations continue.

It ensures that the hospital is well-equipped to meet the growing healthcare demands of the community.
