PSL Star Lucas Ribeiro Credits Sundowns Teammates for His Success

Mamelodi Sundowns’ attacking sensation Lucas Ribeiro has heaped praise on his teammates and club following an unforgettable season that saw him claim four major accolades at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) end-of-season awards. The Brazilian forward said the recognition would not have been possible without the collective efforts of those around him.

PSL Awards Night Belongs to Lucas Ribeiro

Ribeiro emerged as the biggest winner during the PSL Awards, which were broadcast on Tuesday night, walking away with the Footballer of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards, the two highest honours in the local game. His outstanding performances ensured he edged out talented youngsters Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United’s Keletso Makgalwa.

In line with PSL regulations, Footballer of the Season is decided by top-flight coaches, who are prohibited from nominating players from their own teams. Meanwhile, the Players’ Player of the Season award is determined by fellow professionals, with each club submitting up to 30 votes, none of which can be cast for a teammate.

The 26-year-old, who finished the Betway Premiership season as the leading goal scorer, also walked away with the Top Goalscorer award after netting 16 league goals. His mesmerising solo strike against Pirates, which began in his own half and ended with a cool finish, earned him Goal of the Season.

Humble in Victory

Despite his clean sweep, Ribeiro made it clear the spotlight belongs just as much to his fellow players and coaches. “The people who support me, my faith in God, my teammates, and the technical team, they all play a part,” he said. “In tough moments, it’s the support from the team that lifts me.”

He continued, “These awards aren’t just mine. I’m simply representing the effort we’ve all put in. It’s easy to shine when you have such a strong group behind you.”

A Season to Remember

Sundowns wrapped up their campaign with a record-breaking eighth consecutive league title, underlining their dominance in domestic football. Ribeiro’s individual brilliance played a key role in that success, with his goals proving crucial throughout the season.

Beyond the local scene, Ribeiro also made headlines internationally by clinching the FIFA Club World Cup Goal of the Tournament, thanks to another dazzling solo effort, this time against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Transfer Talks Heating Up

With his stock rising, speculation around Ribeiro’s future has intensified. Reports suggest that Brazilian side Fluminense are in talks with Sundowns over a potential move for the winger, who has quickly become one of the hottest properties in African football.

While Sundowns may face a tough decision in the upcoming transfer window, Ribeiro’s humility and dedication to the collective have left a lasting impression on the club and fans alike.

Grateful, Grounded and Glorious

“I’m very happy,” Ribeiro said. “But I don’t play alone. So I want to thank my teammates and the supporters. It’s been an incredible season.”

His selfless remarks encapsulate not just a standout player but a team-first mentality that continues to define Sundowns’ success. Whether or not he remains at Chloorkop next season, Ribeiro has already etched his name into the club’s history.
