Pearl Thusi’s No-Show at Namibian Festival Sparks R86K Refund Demand from Organiser

South African actress and media personality Pearl Thusi is facing a major backlash after missing her scheduled appearance at the Weekend in the East festival in Rundu, Namibia, on 31 May 2025. The event organiser, Ludgerus Amushila, is now demanding a refund of N$86,406 (around R86,406) from her management company, Africa Creative Agency (ACA), citing financial losses incurred in preparation for Thusi’s attendance.

Breakdown of the Dispute

Amushila confirmed that he had communicated exclusively with ACA regarding Thusi’s appearance. The refund demand covers a N$40,000 booking fee deposit, N$19,346 in flight costs, N$8,360 for visa expenses, and N$18,700 for local transport — all of which were arranged in anticipation of Thusi’s participation at the festival held at AM Ludgerus Boutique Estate.

Frustration reportedly mounted when ACA, instead of resolving the issue directly, referred Amushila to a lawyer not previously involved in the arrangements. According to The Namibian, Amushila feels the agency is evading responsibility after initially confirming all logistics.

Africa Creative Agency Responds

ACA’s co-founder, Yvette Gayle, issued a statement clarifying the agency’s role. She emphasized that ACA acts purely in a representative capacity and does not take legal responsibility for a client’s fulfilment of their commitments. According to Gayle, their responsibilities include facilitating bookings and collecting payments — but they are not liable for cancellations or breaches by the talent.

Pearl Thusi’s Apology and Public Reaction

Before the festival, Pearl Thusi issued a video apology on social media, explaining that “intense and unforeseen circumstances” prevented her from attending. She expressed regret and highlighted her affection for African travel and connection with fans across the continent. However, many fans and followers questioned the vague explanation, with some accusing the star of unprofessionalism.

Broader Industry Concerns

This incident reignites ongoing debates in the entertainment industry about accountability when artists cancel appearances. As cross-border performances and collaborations become more common, both artists and organisers are urged to ensure clear contractual terms and communication channels to avoid costly misunderstandings.

The legal and reputational consequences of missed commitments can be significant — not just for performers, but also for the agencies representing them.
