Orlando Pirates Face Squad Dilemma Ahead of MTN8 Second Leg Against Sundowns

Orlando Pirates head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, is determined for his side to show ambition and fight as they head into the MTN8 semi-final second leg against Mamelodi Sundowns this Saturday. After the first leg ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium, both teams will now meet at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium with everything to play for.

Ouaddou praised the performance of both teams in the first leg, emphasizing the importance of mentality in cup competitions. “We had a great game in the first leg. Two important teams on the continent played fantastic football. We finished 1-1, but cup games often come down to mentality. We will go into the second leg with a lot of ambition,” he said. “We know it will not be easy because we are away, but we will do everything to defend our title.”

Injury Concerns: Van Rooyen’s Absence a Challenge

Ahead of the second leg, Pirates face a key injury concern. Deano van Rooyen, a crucial defender, had to leave the pitch in the first half of their 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC. Although the extent of his injury is still unclear, Ouaddou is hopeful the medical team will have more information soon.

“I haven’t yet spoken with the medical department, but we will assess the situation and conduct some exams to confirm the extent of the injury,” said Ouaddou.

Right-Back Options: Who Will Fill Van Rooyen’s Role?

With Van Rooyen potentially unavailable, the Pirates coach must decide who will step in at right-back. Kamogelo Sebelebele has been in fine form and could be moved forward into his natural wing position. This would leave space for players like Thabiso Lebitso, Siyabonga Ndlozi, and Tshepo Mashiloane to fill the defensive role.

Momentum: Orlando Pirates Look to Build Confidence Ahead of Sundowns Clash

Despite the injury setback, Pirates will take confidence from their midweek victory over Stellenbosch FC. Sebelebele’s early strike secured the win, and while Stellies applied pressure late, Pirates held on. The victory not only lifted them out of the bottom three in the league but also provided a much-needed boost ahead of the Sundowns clash.

The Buccaneers will aim to build on that momentum, especially since a score draw higher than 1-1 will see them advance through the away goals rule. However, Sundowns are also determined to secure their place in the final.
