Key Responsibilities
The primary duty of the Medical Officer will be to provide comprehensive medical care to internal medicine patients across general and sub-specialty units, both in outpatient and inpatient settings. The key responsibilities include:
- Patient Care: The officer will be responsible for daily ward rounds, offering medical care for both inpatient and outpatient cases. This includes handling referrals and transfers from level 1, 2, and 3 facilities within the hospital’s drainage areas.
- Consultations: The Medical Officer will conduct consultations from other departments and ensure that detailed and accurate discharge summaries are written for all patients.
- Specialty Clinics: They will run medical outpatient and sub-specialty clinics, referring patients to higher levels of care when required, and managing down-referrals to level 1 clinics for stable patients.
- Outreach and Coordination: Regular outreach will be conducted at level 2 and level 3 hospitals, with a focus on enhancing patient care within these facilities.

Requirements for the Medical Officer Role
To be eligible for the position, candidates must meet the following qualifications and experience:
- Qualifications: Applicants must possess an appropriate qualification that allows them to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
- Registration: Candidates should be registered with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must have a current HPCSA registration for 2025/26.
- Experience:
- Grade 1: No experience is required for Medical Officers who are newly registered with the HPCSA.
- Grade 2: At least 5 years of experience as a Medical Officer after HPCSA registration.
- Grade 3: At least 10 years of experience as a Medical Officer after HPCSA registration.
