Overview of the Position
The Medical Officer – Orthopaedics will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to Orthopaedic/Hand and Microsurgery patients, both in inpatient and outpatient settings. Key Requirements
The ideal candidate must meet the following requirements to be eligible for this position:
- MBChB or equivalent qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
- Current HPCSA registration for the year 2025/26.
- Ability to function independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team, working across various levels of medical care.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties for the Medical Officer – Orthopaedics will include, but are not limited to:
1. Patient Care
- Providing comprehensive medical care to Orthopaedic/Hand and Microsurgery patients, covering both general and subspecialty cases.
- Managing referrals and transfers from level 1, 2, and 3 facilities within the hospital drainage area.
- Conducting daily ward rounds in the Orthopaedic wards, attending to both inpatient and outpatient cases.
- Consulting with other departments to manage complex cases and ensuring meticulous discharge summaries for all patients.
- Managing Orthopaedic outpatient and subspecialty clinics, ensuring proper up-referral of patients to subspecialists and down-referral of stable patients to level 1 clinics.
2. Teaching and Mentorship
- Providing formal training and mentoring to junior medical officers, registrars, and Orthopaedic/Hand and Microsurgery students.
- Mentoring nurses and allied health workers in the Orthopaedic wards and clinics.
- Extending outreach training to level 2 and 3 hospitals.
3. Collaborative Work
- Collaborating with the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, and Sefako Makgatho University for joint appointments.
- Working alongside other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes across the department.
