Key Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Care and Anaesthesia
    • Provide peri-operative anaesthesia care to patients, ensuring safe and effective procedures.
    • Improve theatre utilisation and reduce theatre cancellations to optimise service delivery.
    • Ensure that patients receive optimal care, following best practice standards in anaesthesiology.
  2. Teamwork and Supervision
    • Work collaboratively with all hospital staff and ensure effective communication across all departments.
    • Supervise and guide junior medical staff, assisting them with patient management and clinical skills development.
    • Provide continuous support in departmental cost-efficiency practices and maintaining high standards of patient care.
  3. Training and Development
    • Contribute to the education and continuous training of interns, students, and junior doctors.
    • Assist with preparing interns for the DA Exams and attend relevant academic meetings to stay up to date with industry advancements.
  4. Administrative and Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, policies, and protocols.
    • Maintain accurate and thorough anaesthesia records and report on adverse events as required.
  5. Operational and Emergency Services
    • Perform commuted overtime when necessary to provide a 24-hour clinical service.
    • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, promoting an integrated approach to patient care.

Requirements

To be considered for the role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Qualifications
    • MBChB or a relevant qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Experience
    • Grade 1: No experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA.
    • Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience post-registration with the HPCSA.
    • Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience post-registration with the HPCSA.
  • Additional Qualifications
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Diploma in Anaesthesiology, and Primaries are highly advantageous.
  • Other Requirements
    • Applicants must have current annual registration with the HPCSA for the 2025/26 period.
    • South African citizenship is preferred.
    • Candidates with foreign qualifications must provide a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of educational qualifications and other relevant documents not older than 6 months before the interview.

  • Personnel Suitability Checks will be conducted before appointment, including criminal checks, qualification verification, and reference checks.
  • The Department reserves the right to not fill the position if no suitable candidate is found.
  • Normal and commuted overtime may be required based on operational needs.
  • Preference will be given to South African citizens.

Salary and Benefits
