Still Flying: Mapimpi Nears 50 Tests with 32 Tries for the Springboks

As all eyes turn to Willie le Roux’s milestone 100th Test match for the Springboks this Saturday in Gqeberha, another stalwart continues to quietly defy the odds and deliver: Makazole Mapimpi.

At 34 years old, Mapimpi remains one of the most prolific wings South African rugby has ever seen. He is set to earn his 47th Test cap against Italy. With 32 international tries already to his name, he boasts a strike rate few can match. Despite no longer being the first-choice left wing, his presence in the squad speaks volumes about his consistency and professionalism.

Makazole Mapimpi Still in the Fight

While Kurt-Lee Arendse has cemented himself as the Boks’ current go-to option at No. 11 and Cheslin Kolbe continues to shine at No 14, Mapimpi has not faded away. Instead, he will line up on the wing this weekend alongside Edwill van der Merwe, who earns just his second Test start. Le Roux completes the back three at fullback.

There has been speculation around whether Mapimpi could feature at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. It would be his third appearance at the global showpiece. For now, the veteran remains firmly in the picture, particularly as a key figure at the Sharks. Importantly, he’s never let the Springboks down.

Remarkable Try Record

Mapimpi’s try tally speaks for itself: 32 tries in 46 Tests. That puts him far ahead of many of his teammates, including Kolbe (18 tries in 41 matches) and Arendse (19 in 25 Tests). His ability to find the tryline consistently is a rare asset, especially at Test level.

With Canan Moodie also showing versatility across the backline and set to start at outside centre this Saturday, plus promising talent like Ethan Hooker on the bench, the competition for wing spots remains fierce. Mapimpi knows opportunities may be fewer. Each performance could be critical in keeping himself in the mix.

Grounded and Grateful

Speaking to the media ahead of the Italy Test, Mapimpi remained grounded and focused on the present.

“I can’t focus too far ahead,” he said. “The only thing I can do is focus on the Sharks when I play for them, or for the Springboks when I am here. Right now, I’m very happy to be part of this group at this stage.”

Saturday’s match holds extra significance for Mapimpi, as it will be played in Gqeberha, a city in the Eastern Cape where he grew up. Playing in front of family and a home crowd adds a layer of personal meaning.

“We’re all excited to be back here in the Eastern Cape,” he said. “The last time we played here was in 2021, after Covid. It’s rare for the Boks to come here, so there’s a lot of excitement all around.”

One Game at a Time

With so many talented wings across the country, including some not currently in the Springbok setup, Mapimpi remains realistic about his role. But his hunger, experience, and knack for scoring tries make him a valuable asset to the squad.

He may no longer be the automatic first name on the teamsheet. However, as Mapimpi approaches the 50-Test mark with an extraordinary try-scoring record, one thing is clear, the veteran winger is still flying high.
