Kaizer Chiefs vs Sundowns Showdown Sparks Ticket Sales Surge
The highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns is already drawing massive attention. Ticket sales are surging ahead of Wednesday’s blockbuster showdown at Soccer City.
Stadium Management South Africa’s managing director, Bertie Grobbelaar, confirmed on Monday morning that fans eager to witness the heavyweight encounter had already snapped up an impressive 27,000 tickets.
Capacity Decision Pending
Speaking at a media briefing, Grobbelaar revealed that the stadium authorities are weighing two attendance options. Officials will decide on Tuesday whether to cap ticket sales at 45,000 or increase capacity to 60,000.
“It’s a strange discussion to have today, but determining the capacity for Wednesday’s match is quite the challenge,” Grobbelaar said. “Right now, we’re sitting at about 27,000 ticket sales.”
Balancing Safety and Commercial Demands
Grobbelaar explained that two proposals have been presented to the Event Safety and Security Planning Committee (ESSPC). One proposal allows for 45,000 fans, and another allows for 60,000.
“Safety and security are always our top priorities, but we also have to balance the commercial side of the planning. Opting for a 60,000 capacity instead of 45,000 comes with an additional cost of around R500,000, covering city services, JMPD, medical support, and security companies,” he said.
The stadium boss confirmed that discussions with Chiefs are ongoing. The final decision will be announced by 12 o’clock on Tuesday.
“This decision obviously impacts a wide range of factors. These include gate access, traffic and transport management, and parking allocations.” Grobbelaar added, “We’re fully prepared for both scenarios, and we have presented plans to the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality for approval.”

With the game scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30pm, organizers are factoring in the challenges of weekday travel and end-of-month logistics. However, the buzz around the fixture shows no signs of slowing down.
Fans are already gearing up for what promises to be a fiery clash. The reigning champions Sundowns will face their historic rivals Chiefs under the bright lights of Soccer City.
