Ngcobo: Kaizer Chiefs Cup Win Proof They Can Defeat Sundowns Again

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo says Amakhosi will draw confidence from their Nedbank Cup semifinal victory over Mamelodi Sundowns when the two sides clash again in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

Chiefs came from behind to edge Sundowns 2-1 in April, a result that helped them go on to claim their first official Premier Soccer League trophy in a decade.

Chiefs Still Seeking Consistency

Despite the cup success, consistency remains a major hurdle for Chiefs if they are to truly challenge the dominant Sundowns, who have lifted the Premiership title eight seasons in a row.

Amakhosi lost both league encounters against Masandawana last season and also suffered a heavy defeat in the Carling Black Label Knockout, finishing a disappointing ninth in the standings.

This season, however, has started on a positive note, with Chiefs winning their opening three Premiership matches. Wednesday’s fixture, though, represents their biggest test yet.

Ngcobo: “We Know We Can Beat Them”

“In the previous game we showed we can play Sundowns and beat them,” Ngcobo said at the Chiefs Village this week.

“I think the game plan worked very well in the last game against them. We just have to continue with that. We know Sundowns like to have the ball, so it is up to us to defend well and make sure we take our chances when we get them.”

Personal Growth and New Season Form

Ngcobo endured a mixed 2024/25 campaign, making only 15 appearances across all competitions. But he looks rejuvenated this season, having featured in all three of Chiefs’ league games so far and marking the opener with a stunning free kick against Stellenbosch.

“As footballers you are always looking to improve your game,” he added.
“It is what I have been working for, and I have seen improvements, so I am happy.”

Nabi Returns to the Dugout

Chiefs will also be boosted by the return of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who has been absent from the touchline since the start of the campaign due to a family emergency.

“It is always great to have our coach back … we are looking forward to the game,” said Ngcobo.
“But it is the same team, and they all work together as a technical team. So it was not that much different when he was away.”
