The event targets music audiences, families and local businesses, with organisers positioning it as both a cultural showcase and an economic driver. According to Joburg Tourism, the partnership is intended to strengthen Johannesburg’s positioning as a lifestyle and events destination while supporting local creative industries.

City Partnership Signals Shift in Johannesburg’s Events Strategy

The City of Johannesburg has positioned the festival as part of a broader strategy to link cultural programming with tourism and economic activity.

According to Joburg Tourism Executive Head for Destination Marketing and Events, Belu Mabandla, the partnership reflects a focus on leveraging cultural events to support both artists and local businesses.

The department said the collaboration is aligned with efforts to position Johannesburg as a leading business and lifestyle destination on the continent.

Jazz in the Lights is hosted by the City as part of the Arts Alive Programme, which supports arts and cultural events across Johannesburg.

Economic Impact and Job Creation Linked to Festival

Data from previous editions indicates that the festival has contributed to local economic activity.

    According to Joburg Tourism:

    • The 2024 edition supported 22 small businesses
    • A total of 208 jobs were created
    • 177 professional artists were contracted
    • Three school choirs participated in development programmes

The City said these outcomes demonstrate the role of cultural events in supporting employment and small business participation.

Animal Welfare Measures in Place for Zoo-Based Event

Organisers have confirmed that the event will operate under strict animal welfare guidelines due to its location at the Johannesburg Zoo.

    According to the City:

    • Noise levels will be monitored and managed
    • On-site engineers will oversee sound control
    • Zoo staff will monitor animal behaviour and visitor movement

The department said these measures are intended to ensure that the event does not negatively impact animals housed at the facility.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The return of Jazz in the Lights adds to Gauteng’s calendar of public events and reflects ongoing investment in arts and culture programming.

    For residents, the event provides:

    • Access to a live jazz experience in a central Johannesburg location
    • Opportunities to support local artists and performers
    • Increased activity for small businesses and vendors
    • A family-friendly outing linked to a well-known public venue

The involvement of Joburg Tourism may also signal increased support for similar events across the province.
