Gayton McKenzie Commits R82m to Introduce VAR in South African Football

South Africa is set to take a major leap in modernising its football scene, as Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has allocated R82 million for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Betway Premiership.

Calls for VAR Intensify

Calls for VAR have been growing steadily following a series of controversial refereeing decisions in recent seasons. Pressure mounted further after McKenzie took office, with the minister making it clear from the outset that bringing VAR to South Africa was one of his top priorities.

For years, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has argued that the financial burden made VAR impossible to implement. However, the latest funding allocation signals the most significant step yet toward turning that vision into reality.

Official Confirmation from DSAC

In a statement, the department confirmed that progress is well underway:

“The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture [DSAC] is pleased to announce significant progress in the procurement and implementation of the Video Assistant Referee [VAR] system for South African football, in close collaboration with the South African Football Association [SAFA] and the Premier Soccer League [PSL].”

According to the update, several milestones have already been achieved, including the publication of a Request for Proposals (RFP), responses from potential service providers, and alignment with FIFA’s Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP).

Raising Standards and Credibility

The move is aimed at improving fairness, accuracy, and the overall credibility of local competitions. It also ensures South Africa keeps pace with international standards, as most major footballing nations have already adopted the technology.

While challenges remain such as training referees, logistical rollout, and long-term funding the R82 million investment underscores McKenzie’s determination to address long-standing concerns. If successful, VAR could help restore fan confidence and protect South Africa’s standing in global football.
