Ex-Orlando Pirates Duo Join Kaizer Chiefs in Surprise Off-Season Swoop

Kaizer Chiefs have bolstered their squad with the signing of two former Orlando Pirates defenders, Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako. The pair arrive at Naturena as free agents following their release from the Buccaneers at the end of June.

Their addition comes in the wake of a busy week for the Soweto giants, who also recently unveiled three other new signings—left-back Nkanyiso Shinga, striker Flavio Silva, and attacking midfielder Ethan Chislett. They continue their squad rebuild ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Fresh Faces at Kaizer Chiefs

The move sees Chiefs secure the services of two experienced PSL campaigners. Monyane and Mako, both of whom featured in Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League runs and domestic cup triumphs. They bring top-level pedigree to a Chiefs backline that has lacked consistency and bite in recent years.

Monyane, a pacey right-back known for his defensive resilience and attacking overlaps, will add depth on the flank. Meanwhile, Mako, originally from Zebediela in Limpopo, is a versatile left wingback. His tactical discipline and stamina have made him a fan favourite at his former club.

Chiefs officially confirmed the double signing in a club statement, expressing their excitement about the pair’s arrival:
“Kaizer Chiefs are delighted to announce the signings of Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako as their two new acquisitions after announcing three other players earlier this week,” the club said.

“Previously with Orlando Pirates, the pair bring valuable experience to Naturena, having won trophies and participated in the CAF Champions League in recent seasons.”

Big Boost to Defence

Both players are expected to play crucial roles in bolstering the defensive unit at Kaizer Chiefs. The team struggled with stability and injuries across the backline throughout last season. The club’s management is hopeful that the arrival of Monyane and Mako will provide the necessary reinforcement and competition for starting places.

Monyane is expected to link up with the rest of the squad travelling to the Netherlands on Thursday for a high-intensity pre-season training camp. There, he will get the chance to integrate with his new teammates under the technical team’s watchful eye.

However, there’s some concern around Mako’s immediate involvement. Reports suggest the left-back picked up a knock during training and may not be fit enough to travel with the squad. The club has yet to officially confirm the extent of the injury.

More Moves on the Cards?

The acquisition of Monyane and Mako adds to the growing list of new arrivals at Naturena. This highlights Kaizer Chiefs’ aggressive approach in the current transfer window. With five new players already confirmed, and possibly more to follow, Amakhosi’s intent to return to domestic dominance is clear.

It also underscores the shifting dynamics in the country’s top flight. Players once central to Pirates’ plans now seek fresh challenges with their Soweto rivals. The signings could add an extra layer of intrigue when the two giants of local football clash in the upcoming Soweto Derby.

Chiefs Fans Dare to Dream Again

Supporters, who endured a frustrating and trophyless campaign last season, will be hoping these signings mark the start of a true revival at Naturena. With the arrival of experienced defenders like Monyane and Mako, coupled with flair players like Chislett and Silva, Chiefs’ squad is beginning to take on a more balanced and dangerous look.

While questions remain about whether these changes will be enough to mount a serious title challenge, there’s no denying that Amakhosi are finally moving with purpose. Fans may just have reason to believe again.
