Safe Driving Alone in Gauteng: A Woman’s Guide to Road Safety After Dark

Dinner in Sandton that runs deliciously late. A concert at SunBet Arena. A show at Montecasino, a girls’ night in Rosebank, a festival in Pretoria that you’re definitely not leaving early. Gauteng after dark is one of the best versions of Gauteng - and plenty of women prefer to get there behind their own steering wheel.

There’s a lot to love about driving yourself. You leave when you want. You’re not waiting for anyone. Your playlist, your aircon, your rules.

And just like we covered in our Rideshare Safety Guide confidence on the road isn’t about luck - it’s about a handful of small habits that take seconds and quickly become automatic.

When it comes to driving alone at night in Gauteng, here’s your practical guide to getting there, parking smart and getting home - on your terms.

    Before You Leave

A good night drive starts at home, before you’ve even touched the ignition.

    • Fill up in daylight. Never head out at night with the fuel light flirting with empty. A tank above halfway means you’ll never need to stop somewhere you’d rather not.
    • Charge your phone - properly. Your phone is your map, your contact line and your backup plan. Keep a car charger in the cubbyhole as a permanent resident.
    • Check your tyres if you’re travelling far. A drive from Joburg to Pretoria is no time to discover a slow puncture. Organisations like AA South Africa recommend checking pressure regularly - and it takes two minutes at any garage.
    • Share your plans. Drop a pin or a quick message to a friend: where you’re going, roughly when you’ll be back. It’s a ten-second habit that costs nothing.
    • Plan your route before you pull off. Set your navigation while parked, not while driving. And late at night, stick to main roads you know - this is not the moment to test a shortcut through unfamiliar streets, even if the app promises to save you four minutes.

Parking Matters More Than You Think

Where you park shapes how your whole evening feels - especially the walk back to your car.

Choose well-lit parking, as close to the entrance as you can get. Major venues like Sandton Convention Centre, Montecasino, Emperors Palace and SunBet Arena have visible security and busy, brightly lit parking areas - use them, and don’t be shy to ask security to walk you to your car if it’s late. That’s what they’re there for.

If you’re in a parkade, avoid the isolated far corners and quiet basement levels when you can. A spot near the lifts, the pay stations or the exit boom is worth the extra loop around.

And on the walk back: head up, keys already in hand, moving like you know exactly where you’re going - because you do. Digging through a handbag in the middle of a parking lot splits your attention right when you want it whole. Find your keys before you leave the restaurant, not next to your car door.

Don’t Sit in Your Parked Car

Here’s a habit worth breaking: getting into your car and then sitting there - replying to messages, posting the group photos, scrolling through the evening.

A stationary car with a distracted person inside is exactly the situation you want to avoid.

The messages can wait ten minutes.

The Get-In-Get-Going Rule: by the time you open your car door, you should be ready to leave. Doors locked, engine on, and moving within moments. Do your scrolling before you leave the venue, or once you’re safely home.

If You Think Someone Is Following You

Most drives are completely uneventful. But it’s worth knowing exactly what you’d do, so you never have to figure it out in the moment.

    • Stay calm and keep driving. Don’t speed, don’t panic.
    • Do not drive home. Home is the one place you don’t want to lead anyone.
    • Head somewhere busy and public - a police station, a 24-hour petrol station with a shop, or a shopping centre with security at the entrance.
    • Call someone and tell them where you are and where you’re heading. Hands-free, always.
    • Don’t stop on quiet roads to check whether you’re imagining it. Get to bright lights and people first.

Chances are you’ll never need this list. Having it makes every drive calmer anyway.

    Vehicle Habits That Matter

The everyday stuff, worth putting on autopilot:

    • Doors locked the moment you get in - make it a reflex.
    • Windows up or mostly up in slow traffic and at intersections.
    • Valuables out of sight, and your handbag off the passenger seat - the footwell or boot is its home.
    • Emergency numbers saved and easy to reach: 10111 for SAPS, 112 from any cellphone, plus your insurer’s roadside assistance.
    • Keep your car serviced. A reliable car is a safety feature. Road-safety initiatives like Arrive Alive consistently point to vehicle condition as one of the simplest things drivers can control.

    Trust Your Instincts

Same rule as always, because it sits above every other rule: if something doesn’t feel right, you don’t need a reason.

Leave. Move somewhere busy. Ask security for help. Change the plan.

An awkward exit or a longer route home is a small price for peace of mind. Your instincts are data. Trust them.

    Her City. Her Rules

Driving yourself around Gauteng is freedom - the good kind, where the night ends when you say it does. None of this is about fear. It’s about a handful of small habits that let you enjoy the restaurants, the concerts, the café mornings, the markets and the weekend escapes with your mind fully on the fun part.

So book the table, buy the tickets, fill the tank. Your city is waiting - and you know exactly how to move through it.
