Bongiwe Msomi: A True Game-Changer for South African Sport

Bongiwe Msomi’s name is etched into the history books of netball, not only in our country but also on the international stage. Born on 19 January 1988 in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, Msomi has risen from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated and influential figures in the sport. A gifted centre and wing attack during her playing days, she is now carving a new path as a mentor, coach, and role model for young netballers across the country.

Humble Roots and Early Passion

Msomi’s love for netball was sparked during her high school days at Chief Luthayi High School. Despite financial challenges that would have discouraged many, she persisted – balancing schoolwork and her growing passion for the game. Her talent was undeniable and quickly caught the attention of selectors. From that moment, her rise through the ranks was unstoppable.

A Stalwart for the National Team

Msomi made her international debut for South Africa in 2011, beginning a remarkable career that spanned 12 years. Earning 171 caps, she retired in 2023 as the most capped player in the national team’s history – a symbol of her consistency, commitment, and elite performance.

She represented the country in four Netball World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023) and three Commonwealth Games (2014, 2018, 2022), consistently playing at the highest level. In 2016, Msomi was handed the captain’s armband, a role she embraced until her retirement. Under her leadership, the Proteas earned global respect for their tenacity and team unity.

Making Her Mark on the Club Scene

While Msomi’s national career was illustrious, her club journey also deserves acclaim. Locally, she played for the Kingdom Stars (2014–2016) before moving abroad to test herself in world-class leagues. She joined England’s Surrey Storm, where she helped win the Netball Superleague title in 2015. This was followed by a successful stint with Wasps Netball, lifting another championship in 2017.

Her career then took her to Australia with the Adelaide Thunderbirds, where she competed in the fiercely competitive Suncorp Super Netball between 2017 and 2018. Returning home, Msomi captained the Gauteng Golden Fireballs to Telkom Netball League glory in 2022 – a fitting local send-off to her playing days.
