Key Responsibilities and Duties

As a Boiler Operator, you will be tasked with a variety of important duties, which include:

  1. Chemical Management:
    • Requisition chemicals from stores as required.
    • Test the quality of water for softeners and check the returning flow of condensate water.
    • Fill the chemicals tank with required chemicals as per prescribed standards.
    • Top up salt in the brine tank.
    • Monitor the condition of chemical pumps.
  2. Boiler Monitoring and Maintenance:
    • Test the total dissolved solids (TDS) and perform blow-downs as per prescribed guidelines.
    • Continuously monitor steam pressure and ensure that the correct temperature is maintained in the hot well tanks.
    • Adjust the stocker to ensure efficient steam delivery.
    • Report any defects in a timely manner to ensure a quick resolution.
  3. Water Supply Management:
    • Regularly check the feedwater pump levels and hot well tanks for sufficient water supply to the boiler.
    • Ensure that standby boilers and funnels are always full of water and chemicals.
  4. Fuel Flow Control:
    • Control the flow of fuel to the boilers to maintain optimal operation.
  5. Environment and Health Safety:
    • Maintain a safe and clean boiler environment by ensuring proper use of protective clothing and safety procedures.
    • Clean the brine tank, water filters, and remove ash from boilers, grit arrestors, and the smoke box.
  6. Supervision and Administrative Duties:
    • Perform supervisory functions when required.
    • Receive and sign off on coal deliveries.
    • Provide shift reports and maintain the shift/overtime register.
    • Perform any other duties delegated by the supervisor.

Requirements

The Gauteng Department of Health is looking for candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Educational Requirements:
    • Grade 10 (or equivalent qualification).
    • A National Steam Certificate, which is recognized and equivalent to the industry standards.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience in operating boilers.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • A strong understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 and its regulations.
    • Proficient in planning, organizing, and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
