Car hijackings remain a significant concern for South African motorists. Each year, thousands fall victim to this crime. Certain cars are targets over others. But what makes these vehicles prime targets, and how can you protect your car from falling into the hands of criminals?

Why Are Certain Cars More Targeted Than Others?

Car hijackings in South Africa have been rising, influenced by several factors. Some vehicles are at higher risk because of their popularity, resale value, and demand for spare parts.

John Cooper, a crime analyst, explains that criminals often target vehicles in high demand. They may steal these cars to resell them or strip them for valuable parts to sell on the black market. These vehicles sell quickly and are dismantled for parts.

The Top 10 Most Hijacked Cars in South Africa

According to recent data from the South African Police Service, insurance companies, and crime experts, the following are the top 10 most hijacked vehicles in the country. These cars are typically popular due to their high resale values and demand for parts.

    1. Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux tops the list as the most hijacked vehicle in South Africa. This versatile bakkie is in high demand for both personal and commercial use. Its high resale price and demand for parts, such as the engine and wheels, make it an attractive target for criminals.

    1. Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo is a hot target. Popular with young professionals, especially first-time buyers, the Polo’s parts—such as airbags, electronics, and engines—are in demand on the black market.

    1. Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner, a popular 4×4 vehicle, is popular for its parts or even the entire vehicle. Families and business owners commonly choose this model, and its high resale value makes it an appealing target.

    1. Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger, like the Toyota Hilux, is another prime target for criminals. Its size, value, and demand for parts increase its vulnerability to hijacking.

    1. Nissan NP200

The smaller Nissan NP200 bakkie is a target because of its fuel efficiency and practicality. It is popular in retail and commercial sectors, which makes it appealing to hijackers looking to sell the vehicle or its parts.

    1. BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is a sought-after luxury car. The stolen car will be sold or stripped for parts such as electronics and engines, which go on the black market.

    1. Toyota Quantum

The Toyota Quantum is a hot target due to its high demand and value in the passenger transportation industry. Criminals steal these vehicles to sell them or dismantle them for parts.

    1. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, another luxury vehicle, is a prime target for criminals. Mercedes-Benz parts are highly valued on the black market, which makes these cars vulnerable to theft.

    1. Hyundai H-1

The Hyundai H-1 van is used in tourism and transport. It is often hijacked because of its commercial value. Hijackers target these vehicles for resale or to steal parts that can be sold.

    1. Audi A3

Compact luxury cars like the Audi A3 are hijacked for their valuable parts, such as engines and electronics. The A3’s stylish design and reliability make it an attractive choice for criminals.

Why Are These Cars So Attractive to Car Thieves?

These cars are often targeted because they have a high resale value, are in demand on the used car market, and their parts are valuable. Models like the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Polo are particularly appealing to criminals due to their parts’ worth.

Karen Moore, a law enforcement official, explains, “The key to understanding car theft is that criminals don’t steal cars for their own sake. They steal to make a profit.”

Regional Trends: Where Are Hijackings Most Common?

While car hijackings occur throughout the country, some provinces experience a higher rate of these crimes. Gauteng, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, has the highest number of hijackings, owing to its dense population and high levels of economic activity.

“Gauteng has the highest number of car thefts in South Africa,” says Karen Moore. “It’s a major city with valuable cars and heavy traffic, making it a prime target for car hijackers.”

How to Protect Your Car from Theft

There are several steps you can take to reduce the risk of being a victim of car hijacking. Here are a few tips:

    1. Install a Tracking System
A tracking device is one of the best ways to protect your vehicle. Authorities will quickly locate your car.
    2. Park in Well-Lit Areas
Always park in secure, well-lit areas. Avoid isolated spots, particularly at night when hijackings are more likely to occur.
    3. Vary Your Routes
Criminals often observe patterns and predictability. Changing your driving routes makes it more difficult for hijackers to target you.
    4. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Be mindful of the vehicles around you, especially when stopped at traffic lights or in crowded areas. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, drive to a safer location.
    5. Avoid Stopping in High-Risk Areas
Never stop in isolated or unsafe areas, especially after dark. If you feel uneasy, continue driving to a more populated and secure spot.

Tips from the Experts on Preventing Car Hijackings

Richard Brussow, a representative from the National Hijack Prevention Academy, advises that a combination of awareness and proactive measures can help prevent hijackings. He suggests that installing physical security features, such as steering wheel locks, anti-theft alarms, and tracking systems, can make your vehicle less appealing to thieves.

    Prioritise Vehicle Safety

Car hijacking remains a constant threat in South Africa. Certain vehicles are more vulnerable due to their popularity and high value. Among the most hijacked models are the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Polo.

Installing tracking devices, parking in secure areas, and staying alert reduces the risk of theft. Staying informed and proactive is key to ensuring the safety of your car and yourself.
