Given Cullinan’s close proximity to Pretoria and Johannesburg, getting there by car is a breeze. But why not make an event of it and arrive by a 60-year-old steam train for a change?
The vintage steam train, which departs from the private Hermanstad Station in Pretoria, is the perfect way to travel to the historic town Cullinan while taking in wonderful scenery along the way.
As the train leaves Pretoria, you can sit back and relax knowing your car is safe in the station parking. While enjoying refreshments sold at the on-board kiosk, look out for noteworthy sights such as the Union Buildings, Loftus Versveld Stadium, the University of South Africa, the modern Gautrain Station and the old Pretoria Station.

Enjoy the ride as the coughs and chugs towards Cullinan through Gezina, Villieria, Queenswood, Waltloo, Silverton, Denneboom and Mamelodi. As the train meanders past the Somabula Nature Reserve, look out for bontebok, ostrich, giraffe and endangered rhino.
Disembark at the old Cullinan Station and make the most of four hours to relax and explore this historical town, browse boutiques, visit historical places of interest and museums, enjoy a leisurely lunch at any one of the quaint eateries, or have a picnic under the oak trees in the nearby park.
There’s a 10% discount for parties of 15 or more when booking directly with Friends of the Rail. It is best to send an email to [email protected] to make your booking. What better way to travel to a town from the past than on a train from the past? It’s well worth the ride.
