Established in 1906, Kitchener’s Carvery Bar is one of Johannesburg’s oldest continuously licensed bars and a Braamfontein institution, right on the 702 Jozi My Jozi Walk the Talk route. Its pressed-ceiling, wood-panelled Victorian rooms have been reinvented for a new generation as a beloved nightlife and live-music hub, drawing students, creatives and music lovers with DJs, bands and a famously unpretentious crowd.
The heritage carvery-bar bones remain intact, giving Kitchener’s a rare sense of history amid Braamfontein’s youthful energy, while the adjoining Little Kitchener’s serves pizza to soak up the night. By day it is a characterful spot for a drink; by night it is one of the inner city’s essential party addresses, minutes from Constitution Hill.
