Description

The Wilds Nature Reserve Houghton Johannesburg

The Wilds Nature Reserve is one of Johannesburg’s most magical green spaces — a 16-hectare indigenous garden draped across two rocky koppies between Houghton and Killarney. Once faded, The Wilds Nature Reserve has been lovingly restored in recent years and is now a beloved sanctuary of winding stone paths, indigenous plants, birdlife and playful metal sculptures by artist James Delaney.

Paved and stepped trails climb gently through aloes, ferns and forest to viewpoints that reveal the city skyline framed by trees. It’s a genuinely peaceful escape just minutes from the inner city, popular with walkers, photographers, families and anyone in need of fresh air and quiet.

Why visit The Wilds Nature Reserve

Free to enter and beautifully kept, The Wilds Nature Reserve rewards a slow wander. Look out for the hidden owl, cat and other sculptures tucked among the greenery, bring a hat and water, and time a visit for the softer light of morning or late afternoon. Weekends can be busy with families and picnickers.

It’s a refreshing green stop for anyone in Johannesburg for the 702 Walk the Talk or exploring the city’s leafier suburbs.
