Newtown is situated in Johannesburg’s inner city and forms part of the city’s, and the country’s, cultural and creative hub.

The area has a rich history – it originally started life as racially mixed area housing a brickworks, was the scene of some of the first forced removals in the province and ultimately became a diverse cultural hub.

The district houses theatres, art galleries, restaurants and cafés.

Some of the more significant landmarks in Newtown include the Market Theatre, renowned for its role in the fight against apartheid as the “Theatre of the Struggle”, Museum Africa, which promises a “fascinating rediscovery of the Africa’s glorious ancient past”, and popular live music venue, the Bassline.

Newtown also houses Sci-Bono, Southern Africa’s largest science centre, which seeks to promote interest in science and technology.

The SAB World of Beer is also definitely worth a visit for an entertaining look at the world of brewing, some good food and a few drinks.

A visit to Newtown wouldn’t be complete without taking in some of the restaurants and nightlife that lend themselves to the area’s reputation for a vibrant, cultural focus. See below for more details.
