Kaizer Chiefs Exit Pursuit of Percy Tau—Here’s Why

Kaizer Chiefs have officially stepped back from their interest in signing Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau. This decision comes despite the winger being available on a free transfer. The club had been linked with a potential swoop for the 31-year-old, who recently parted ways with Qatar SC. However, the deal appears to have collapsed. It fell apart before formal negotiations could even begin.

A Need for Experience, but Not at Any Cost

With Chiefs undergoing a rebuild and leaning heavily on youth, the arrival of a seasoned campaigner like Tau was viewed as a potentially valuable addition. His experience, both in Europe and for the national team, could have brought much-needed leadership. This leadership would have benefited the Amakhosi squad.

But in an interview on the Smash Sports YouTube channel, Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung clarified why the club opted not to pursue the player further.

“It’s Not Just About the Money” – Motaung Speaks Out

Motaung explained that while interest was there initially, the tone of early discussions raised red flags for the club. “In our industry, when a player starts with questions about money before anything else, it usually means he’s not the right fit for us,” said Motaung.

He stressed that for Chiefs, character and passion still outweigh financial motives in player recruitment. “When you love the game, the money will follow. But when money becomes the starting point of the conversation, that tells us the player’s heart might not be in the right place,” he added.

Percy Tau’s Salary Demands a Stumbling Block

Sources close to the situation have indicated that Tau’s wage expectations are proving to be a major obstacle in his hunt for a new club. Even Egyptian giants Zamalek, who were once seen as front-runners for his signature, are now believed to have withdrawn. They too have similar concerns.

Tau, who has had stints with Al Ahly, Brighton & Hove Albion and Anderlecht, is one of the most high-profile South African players currently unattached. However, his free agent status is no longer translating into immediate offers. This is largely due to financial expectations clubs deem unrealistic.

Broos Watching Closely as Clock Ticks

The ongoing uncertainty around Tau’s club future is also raising eyebrows at national team level. Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is reportedly eager for Tau to secure regular football as soon as possible. FIFA World Cup qualifiers are set to resume in September.

Broos, who has regularly called up Tau when fit, will be hoping that the forward finds a new home quickly. This ensures he’s match-ready for the crucial qualifiers.

Where To Now for Percy Tau?

With Kaizer Chiefs officially out of the race and Zamalek also said to have cooled their interest, Tau’s list of suitors is narrowing. Unless he adjusts his salary expectations, the risk of remaining clubless heading into the next season looms large.

As it stands, the player who once lit up the CAF Champions League with Al Ahly finds himself at a career crossroads. He is admired for his talent but faces a shrinking market due to off-pitch demands.
