VW Recalls 253 Polo Sedans in South Africa: Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected

Volkswagen has issued a new recall affecting 253 Polo sedans in South Africa, citing safety concerns with improperly fitted seat belts. This follows an earlier recall initiated on 17 July 2025, highlighting an ongoing issue involving seat belt defects in these vehicles.

What’s the Problem?

The recall stems from a manufacturing error that may compromise the functionality of the seat belts in Polo sedans. According to Volkswagen, the issue involves the rear right seat belt, although both rear belts (left and right) should be inspected as a precaution.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) explained that a seat belt webbing mix-up could seriously impair the belts’ ability to restrain passengers during a crash — significantly increasing the risk of severe or even fatal injuries.

When Were These Cars Sold?

The affected Polo sedans were made available for sale from 11 August 2022 onwards. If you purchased a Polo sedan after this date, your vehicle could be part of the recall.

Owners of potentially affected vehicles are urged to contact an authorised VW dealership immediately. The seat belts will be inspected, and any defective parts will be replaced free of charge.

The NCC emphasized the importance of acting swiftly:

“The success of these recalls depends on how quickly consumers respond. These are safety-critical recalls, and it’s vital that motorists take them seriously.”

Why This Matters

The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 empowers the NCC to act in cases where products pose safety risks. By law, car manufacturers must issue recalls and notify the public when such hazards are identified. The NCC’s primary role is to ensure businesses comply with consumer protection regulations and that public safety is not compromised.

If you own a VW Polo sedan purchased from August 2022 onwards, don’t wait, schedule a check-up at your nearest VW dealer to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive
