VW Golf Mk8.5 GTI Officially Confirmed for South Africa

Volkswagen fans in South Africa finally have reason to celebrate. Volkswagen Group Africa has confirmed that it will officially launch the Mk8.5 Golf GTI locally, ending months of speculation over the high-performance eighth-generation model’s arrival in the South African market.
Delayed Arrival Over Fuel Quality Concerns
Concerns over South Africa’s fuel quality previously delayed the local launch of the Mk8.5 Golf GTI. Enthusiasts of the iconic hot hatch had to wait patiently, but Volkswagen has now assured that the wait is nearly over. The car is scheduled to arrive in South African showrooms towards the end of 2025.

Performance Upgrades
Under the bonnet, the Mk8.5 GTI continues to use Volkswagen’s renowned EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine. However, the updated model benefits from a 15 kW increase in power compared to its predecessor, with all power routed to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Torque figures remain unchanged.
The result is an impressive 195 kW and 370 N·m, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 5.9 seconds – half a second quicker than the pre-facelift model. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, maintaining the GTI’s sporty credentials.

Interior and Technology
Inside, the Mk8.5 GTI shares much of its cabin design with the 1.4 TSI models but features several GTI-specific touches. Buyers can choose between traditional tartan cloth seats or leather upholstery, while the cabin comes equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, digital instrumentation, and dual-zone climate control, offering a premium yet sporty driving environment.
