Temporary Lane Closures on N17-2, N12-19, N3-12, and R21 Near OR Tambo for Overhead Sign Upgrades

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced temporary lane closures on key routes near OR Tambo International Airport. The authorities scheduled closures on the N12 Section 19 eastbound at Jetpark Interchange, N17 Section 2 westbound at Denne Plaza Toll Gate, N3 Section 12, and the R21 to replace aging overhead gantry signs.
Purpose of the Upgrade
Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for Gauteng, said the upgrades aim to improve road visibility, provide motorists with accurate information, and enhance overall road safety. “This project is part of SANRAL’s ongoing initiative to replace old overhead signage along national roads.”
The replacement of overhead signs is essential as many of the existing structures have reached the end of their service life. Modern gantry signs are more durable, better illuminated, and easier for drivers to read at high speeds.
Details of the Lane Closures
The planned lane disruptions will occur as follows:
- N12-19 Eastbound: Jetpark Interchange
- N17-2 Westbound: Denne Toll Plaza
- N3-12 and R21: Near OR Tambo southbound off-ramp
Drivers are advised that lane closures may affect traffic flow, especially during peak hours. Motorists should allow extra travel time when using these routes.
Safety and Traffic Management
SANRAL urges all road users to:
- Plan their trips ahead to avoid delays.
- Adhere to traffic accommodation signs and the instructions of flag personnel.
- Drive cautiously and remain patient in the affected areas.
The agency has deployed clear signage and traffic management personnel to guide motorists safely through the construction zones.
Alternative Routes
To minimise delays, SANRAL recommends using alternative routes, which can be viewed on Google Maps:
- N12-19: Kraft to Jetpark
- N17-2: Denne Toll Plaza
- R21: OR Tambo southbound off-ramp
Commitment to Road Safety
SANRAL apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the temporary lane closures. The agency remains committed to improving the quality and safety of South Africa’s national roads through infrastructure upgrades like these.
