SuperSport United Sold to Siwelele FC, Confirms Official Statement

SuperSport United have confirmed the sale of their Premier Soccer League (PSL) status to Siwelele Football Club. This brings months of speculation to a close. It also marks the end of an era for one of the country’s most successful football institutions.

The news was confirmed via an official statement released on Thursday. Matsatsantsa a Pitori bow out of the top-flight stage after more than three decades. The sale is still subject to final approval from the PSL Executive Committee. Until then, both parties have agreed to refrain from further comment.

A Major Shift in Local Football

The club was originally founded in 1994 when M-Net acquired Pretoria City’s PSL license. It has been a pillar of local football for years. With three league titles to their name, achieved in successive seasons from 2007, and nine domestic cup triumphs, SuperSport United carved out a legacy of consistency. They established a reputation for excellence.

However, that legacy will soon be passed on. The sale to Siwelele FC was the outcome of a private bidding process. The new owners are now waiting for the league’s formal green light to take full control.

“SuperSport International would like to confirm the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd,” read the official release. “Following a closed bidding process, Siwelele F.C. was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee.”

Strategic Realignment Behind the Sale

SuperSport United CEO Rendani Ramovha said the decision to sell the club aligns with a broader strategic evolution for the MultiChoice-owned broadcaster. According to Ramovha, the shift is about focusing resources on maintaining leadership as Africa’s top sports broadcaster. Additionally, it will concentrate energy on retaining global competitiveness.

“The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa. It’s also about being a leading global competitor,” Ramovha explained. “Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated a focused direction. This is to ensure SuperSport remains the continent’s premier sports content provider. Also, a leader in broadcast innovation.”

The move signals a transformation in priorities for SuperSport. Their investment in football has been notable for both its financial commitment and competitive impact on the pitch.

Siwelele FC Keen to Embrace the Challenge

While the identity and long-term vision of Siwelele FC remain relatively unknown to the public, their leadership has expressed deep respect for the opportunity they have been handed. Chairman Calvin Le John emphasised their intent to honour and continue the proud legacy SuperSport United built over the decades.

“As Siwelele F.C., we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing a rich, winning tradition in the PSL,” said Le John. “SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year foundation that we hope to build upon. This will be possible should we receive final approval from the PSL Executive Committee.”

End of an Era, Start of a New Chapter

The impending exit of SuperSport United from the local football landscape is bound to leave a noticeable void. Their professional setup, youth development system, and long-standing rivalries, particularly in Tshwane, helped shape the identity of modern South African football.

As the PSL prepares to assess and ratify the sale, the spotlight now turns to Siwelele FC. What their takeover will mean for the future of the league is a key consideration. In a time of increasing commercialisation and evolving football dynamics, this transition could either spark fresh energy. Alternatively, it could invite further scrutiny on the sustainability of club ownership in the country’s top division.
