Springboks Look to Set Benchmark with Italy Test—Jasper Wiese Ready

As the Springboks prepare to launch their 2025 international season in earnest, eighth man Jasper Wiese has set the tone for what’s expected when they face Italy at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. The bruising loose forward, returning from injury, believes this Test is a crucial opportunity to establish dominance and raise the bar for the rest of the season.
Springboks Intent to Dominate from the First Whistle
Following their strong outing against the Barbarians in Cape Town last weekend, which served as a warm-up rather than an official Test, the Boks are now fully focused on Saturday’s clash. While Italy arrive with a youthful and hungry squad, Wiese insists the onus is on South Africa’s forwards to stamp their authority early.
“We need to set a standard for the season ahead,” Wiese said in the build-up to the match. “The Barbarians game gave us a platform, and now we need to carry that momentum into our first full international. There are only a few tweaks to the squad, but the forwards know they have to lead the way.”
The 28-year-old added that physical domination remains central to the Springbok identity. “As forwards, our goal is always to take control up front. Italy are passionate and rise to the occasion, but our mindset has to be to impose ourselves and dictate the terms.”
Return from Injury Adds Extra Fire
This weekend marks Wiese’s return to Test rugby after recovering from a neck injury that sidelined him for over three months. The injury, sustained during his stint in Japan’s League One, required surgery to replace two discs—but the No. 8 says he’s back in full force.
“It might sound scary, but it wasn’t a career-threatening issue. Just a few discs needed replacing and then three months of rehab,” he explained. “I’m feeling good again and grateful to be back in the Springbok camp. It’s a huge honour every time I pull on the jersey.”
Wiese’s physical presence and abrasive ball-carrying ability will be crucial as South Africa look to lay down a physical marker in Pretoria.
A Family Dream in the Making
Wiese is also quietly excited about a possible family affair in green and gold. His younger brother, Cobus Wiese, currently uncapped and part of the extended squad, could soon join him on the international stage. The pair have never played on the same team before.
“It would be a dream come true,” said Wiese. “Cobus has worked incredibly hard, and he deserves this chance. It would mean the world to represent our country together. I’m really proud of him.”
After a stint with Sale Sharks in England, Cobus returned to South African rugby and has shone with the Bulls. Jasper believes the move home reignited his younger brother’s game.
“He’s been excellent this season. Coming back to the Bulls and playing alongside some of the guys now in the Bok camp has helped him grow. I hope he gets a shot to show what he can do at Test level.”
Building Momentum Starts Now
With their sights firmly set on a successful international calendar, the Springboks see this match against Italy not just as a season opener, but as a tone-setter. For Wiese and the rest of the Bok pack, it’s about more than just winning—it’s about sending a message.
The clash at Loftus promises to be a fiery encounter, with Italy no doubt eager to spring a surprise. But for the Springboks, this is their moment to establish control, showcase depth, and set the benchmark for a year packed with high expectations.
