Fields of Study Covered

Shoprite is offering bursaries for the 2026 academic year in the following study areas:

  • Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA) – 10 bursaries
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences – 10 bursaries
  • Food Science – 10 bursaries
  • Retail Business Management – 60 bursaries
  • Supply Chain & Logistics – 10 bursaries

Additional bursary support may be available for studies in Data Science and Information Technology/Systems.

What the Bursary Covers

The bursary includes the following support:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Textbooks and study materials
  • An allowance for accommodation

The total value of each bursary ranges from R30,000 to R60,000, depending on the study field and institution.

Post-Graduation Employment

Students who receive the bursary are required to work for Shoprite for one year for every year of funding received. Graduates will be placed in departments aligned with their field of study:

  • Accounting: Finance department or Shoprite’s Accounting Articles Programme
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences: Freshmark department
  • Food Science: Fresh Foods/Freshmark division
  • Data Science: Shoprite Data Science Academy
  • Information Technology: IT department or SAP Academy
  • Retail Business Management: Retail operations and management
  • Supply Chain & Logistics: Logistics and supply chain units

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must be South African citizens, 27 years of age or younger, and enrolled in a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa. Below are the specific eligibility requirements for each bursary field:

Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA)

  • Studying BCom Accounting or BAcc (CA stream)
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, or doing PGDA/CTA
  • Minimum average: 65%
  • Minimum 65% in Accounting, Auditing, and Taxation subjects

Biological and Agricultural Sciences

  • Studying a BSc in Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or Agriculture
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year
  • Minimum average: 60%

Food Science

  • Studying Food Technology or Food Science
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year
  • Minimum average: 60%

Information Technology / Systems

  • Studying BSc or BCom with a major in Information Technology or Systems Analysis
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year
  • Minimum average: 60%

Retail Business Management

  • Studying for a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Retail Business Management
  • Can be in 1st to 4th year
  • Minimum average: 65%

Supply Chain & Logistics

  • Studying BCom in Logistics or Supply Chain, BSc in Operational Research, or Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Logistics or Supply Chain
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year
  • Minimum average: 60%

Data Science

  • Studying towards a degree or postgraduate qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Must be in 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, or Honours
  • Minimum average: 60%
  • Minimum 65% in Mathematics from the 2nd year
