Shauwn Mkhize Faces Legal Dispute Over Mbabane Highlanders Ownership

The ownership of Eswatini’s Mbabane Highlanders AM FC has become a source of controversy as a legal dispute unfolds in the High Court. South African businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize now faces a challenge from Bheki Simelane, the club’s former owner, who claims the transfer of ownership to Mkhize was unlawful.

Simelane has filed legal action against Mkhize, asserting that he was wrongfully removed from his position. He contends that he remains the rightful owner of the club. This contradicts claims made by South African businessman Alfred Kgomongwe, who says the ownership transfer to Mkhize was legitimate.

Mandla Shongwe, the former Managing Director of Mbabane Highlanders, confirmed the legal proceedings. He stated, “The club was unlawfully taken away from us. It still belongs to us.” Shongwe also noted that the club holds a valid contract lasting until the end of the 2025/26 season, reinforcing their claim.

Mkhize’s Troubled Football Legacy

This isn’t Mkhize’s first brush with controversy over football club ownership. Her former club, Royal AM, struggled with severe financial problems, including a large tax debt. SARS auctioned the club to recover R40 million in taxes owed by Mkhize.

Despite a lengthy bidding process, the sale of Royal AM collapsed when Durban businessman Roy Moodley failed to secure the necessary funds. As a result, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) expelled the club from the league.

What This Means for Mbabane Highlanders

The legal dispute over Mbabane Highlanders raises important questions about the club’s future. Mkhize’s involvement in Eswatini football has sparked skepticism, but the court case will ultimately decide whether she retains ownership or whether Simelane’s claims hold merit.

For now, the club’s future remains uncertain as the legal battle continues. Fans and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the court’s decision. Will Mkhize resolve the issue, or will the turmoil persist?
