SAPS Saves Two Businessmen From Kidnapping and Hijacking

SAPS Rescued Business Men Just Hours After Midrand Kidnapping and Hijacking

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully rescued two kidnapped businessmen following a coordinated operation in Midrand, Gauteng. The incident highlights both the growing sophistication of criminal syndicates and the SAPS’s enhanced capability to combat such crimes.

Swift Rescue by SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team

According to a statement issued by SAPS on Tuesday, the victims were abducted from a car rental business premises by a group of criminals driving a silver or grey Hyundai i10. The suspects then transported the two men to a secluded bushy area along the R21 highway. They were forced to surrender their bank cards and PINs, allowing the criminals to begin withdrawing large sums of money from their accounts.

Acting swiftly, the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, supported by a multidisciplinary unit, was deployed. The victims were located and rescued within hours of the incident. They were found in dense bushland, and their hijacked Range Rover SUV was later recovered in Tembisa.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, SAPS spokesperson, praised the efforts of all involved units. These include the SAPS Flying Squad, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, National Crime Intelligence, Police Emergency Services, and Vision Tactical Security Company. “The SAPS would like to assure the nation that it has the necessary expertise to rescue victims of kidnappings. SAPS urges citizens to alert the authorities immediately when they suspect or witness criminal activity,” Mathe stated.

Johannesburg: A Hotspot for Hijackings and Kidnappings

This incident adds to a worrying trend in Gauteng, particularly Johannesburg, which continues to be plagued by high rates of hijackings and kidnappings. According to SAPS 2024 crime statistics, the province recorded over 1,600 kidnappings and more than 12,000 hijackings in the past year alone. Organised crime syndicates have become more calculated in targeting high-income individuals, often using insider knowledge and multiple perpetrators to execute well-planned abductions.

The Midrand incident appears to fit this pattern. The way the victims were ambushed and coerced suggests the kidnappers may have had prior knowledge of their movements and finances. This has prompted concerns that some criminals may be receiving assistance from individuals within the banking sector, security services, or other close contacts who have access to sensitive personal information.

Increased Police Visibility and Government Support

The successful rescue coincides with increased visible policing in Johannesburg, an initiative led by Mayor Dada Morero. The programme, titled “Live and Visible Policing,” has received praise from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who recently undertook a surprise night-time visit around the city and expressed satisfaction with the improvements in public safety.

Ramaphosa commended the SAPS and municipal officials for their efforts in curbing crime and restoring community confidence. “A safer and cleaner Johannesburg is not only possible but already becoming a reality through collaborative action,” the president said.

Public Urged to Be Alert and Take Precautions

Despite these successes, authorities caution that the fight against crime is far from over. SAPS and safety experts are encouraging citizens to remain vigilant and adopt proactive safety measures:

  • Avoid predictable routines and travel routes.
  • Stay alert when entering or exiting vehicles, especially in secluded areas.
  • Install panic buttons and tracking systems in vehicles.
  • Refrain from using mobile phones while walking to or from vehicles.
  • Share live locations with family or trusted contacts during travel.
  • Report unfamiliar vehicles or individuals loitering near gates, estates, or commercial premises.

Authorities continue to hunt the perpetrators involved in Monday’s kidnapping and hijacking. The Hyundai i10 used in the crime remains a key lead, and anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Community Involvement is Key

Brigadier Mathe concluded by reinforcing the importance of public cooperation. “While the police are well-trained to respond to such crimes, prevention starts with the community. Every report counts, every tip-off can help save a life.”

As Gauteng continues to battle a surge in violent crime, incidents like these underscore both the threats facing residents and the critical importance of unified action between law enforcement agencies, government officials, and the communities they serve.
